GM COVID-19 Update
Hi all,

I will send a separate email later today once the PM has updated us all on the Alert Level status for the entire Country.

It's fair to say it's not looking good for playing golf anytime soon.

Stay safe and well.

Member Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow

Well, with the latest Covid news and lockdowns, we will not know whether there is golf this weekend at the time of this email reaching you. No doubt Neville will update everyone once more in known. That aside, below is a round-up of last Saturday’s club day.

There was only one of the ladies’ group brave enough to try to beat the weather and complete her round, and that was Fiona Nicholls. For her perseverance she wins the LGU for the weekend. Thanks to the men who let her join in so she could log an official scorecard. Up until recently, that would not have been possible. She was greeted on her arrival by a small group of smiling ladies who stayed inside for a couple of quiet “lemonades”.

The second round of men’s club champs was played with the weather dealing out a real mixed bag. It made for tough golf for most of the field who stayed out there to complete their round, especially with so many trying to qualify for club champs.

This coming Saturday, should we be allowed outside to play, the competition for ladies is FMS Stableford. For the men, its Club Champs Qualifying round 3 of 3, with a side competition for those not qualifying similar to last week’s one.

Covid update - Bookings for 28 August will have a block put aside in readiness should this Saturday’s golf not take place. This will be for those booked in for the men’s Club Champs qualifying round 3 using the 28th as a backup week. We will keep you updated re the programme should there be weekends with the course closed.

Another gentle reminder from the Pro Shop that it is your responsibility to Scan and Save your scorecard before handing it in after your round.

After a false start the previous week, the Canterbury men’s interclub golf started last Sunday with mixed results. There will be roundup comments from the team managers starting in this Woodlands Word and moving forward. If you have some spare time on a Sunday, take a look at the Canterbury Golf website for the season programme with times and dates and go watch some very competitive golf and support one of the 3 Harewood teams.

Pro Tip of the week by Craig Mitchell

Here’s the best way I know to take five shots of your score. Put the driver away and work on your short game.

My tip this week - when the situation allows you is to land the ball two paces on the green and let it run like a putt from there to the hole. So, I can hear you saying, “what club do I chip with?” The answer is “all of them”. By that I mean the further the hole is away the less loft you take so the ball runs out further.

Enjoy your golf.

Senior Mens Interclub 2021 - Manager's Reports

Simon Cup – from Guy Chambers

Well, after a postponed start we got the Simon season away. We played the McLeans Island top team at a very well presented Waimairi Beach Golf Club. The weather was 100% better than Saturday with blue skies and sunshine. It wasn’t the start I was looking for going down 7-1 with halves to Ross Fowler and Matt Capill. Next week we take on Christchurch at Waitikiri.

Blank Cup – from Neville Bamford

With Round 1 washed-out we were all looking forward to getting season underway at Avondale GC vs Coringa GC. Good wins for Colin Posa (2&1), Brad Edmonston (2&1), Cameron Giddens (2&1) and Jason Strachan (2&1) plus a hard-fought ½ from yours truly saw the team start with a 4 ½ to 3 ½ win. We are scheduled to play Waimairi Beach at Clearwater this Sunday but expect this won’t be played with Alert level restrictions to be announced later today.

Woodward Cup - from Gavin O’Hara

After last week’s postponement at Russley GC due to the bad weather, we had a glorious day at Clearwater GC against Waitikiri for our Round 2 match. The team were in positive mood and were keen to perform. Great to see Patron Dave Shipley come and support the team as always – Thank you for your continued support Dave, and it’s always a pleasure seeing you out there supporting the team – really appreciated by the whole team.

Match 8 saw hard working Ryan Barham play against former Harewood member Antony Dale, Barham battelled hard, but unfortunately come out on the wrong side losing 3&2,

Match 7 saw Kerry Branson up against Chris Bond and Kerry’s consistent recent play edged out Chris with a solid 3&2 win.

Match 6 saw Player / Manager Gavin O’Hara up against the big hitting Jin Sung Kim. O’Hara was 2 down after 4 holes but battled and played solid golf through the middle of the round to turn the deficit into dormy 4up, and finally getting over the line 2&1.

Match 5 saw Harry Weeds up against the lowest handicapper in their team Woo Bong Kim. Weeds didn’t have his A game with him on the day but battled hard and unfortunately losing 3&2 after Woo made back-to-back birdies on 7 & 8 to close the match out.

Match 4 saw Sam Watkinson up against Simon Marshall and after losing his golf gear in the river behind the back of the 14th green, Watkinson dried his gear off and overpowered Simon to come out on top with a great 3&2 win.

Match 3 saw Josh Smith up against stalwart BT (Brett Turner) Josh playing with a wrist injury showed his power and great talent and rolling the Canterbury Masters stalwart 4&3.

Match 2 saw Scott Manyweathers take on the experienced Aaron Forsyth. Manyweathers battled hard but was not at his usual level and run out losing 2 down.

Match 1 saw Matt McLean play Kris O’Neil. Matt, who has been in good form recently showed his all-round high-level game rolling their number one with a comfortable 5&3 victory.

Harewood won 5 / 3 and sit 4th after round 1 with 5 plus games.
