Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
The fantastic weather just continues for club day golf this year. Beautiful skies and just a wee zephyr of breeze ensured good scores yet again with the greens rolling beautifully. Sounds like something from a novel, but the Canterbury autumn has been kind to golfers so far this year.
Women had a standard Stableford match of the day while the men had the April monthly medal, all grades off the white tees.

This weekend sees qualifying for the BCHP cups for men with the top 16 qualifying for each grade. Those 64 advance to the 4 grades of match play by the days current handicap with the lowest handicap dropping to 0 and the difference of the two handicaps being the match handicap for the higher – standard match play rules. The 4 grades for BCHP are evenly split after all entries are in for the day.
For women it is LGU Round 4, Putting, and Harewood Cup Round 2.
Course and competition information
With many new players joining our club we thought it prudent to make known a few things that need to be known for various competitions, as well as some course care.
- Carts may be used for any club day golf by any members, however any of the large club events such as Harewood 4BBB or Club Champs (including qualifying) need to have a doctor’s certificate produced by players wishing to use them.
- Moving into winter requires more care using carts as they leave indentations on soft turf. Please leave a 10-metre gap around greens while using them.
- Please contact the pro shop or remove your name from the bookings page on the Golf NZ website if you cannot make your weekend booking. This is particularly important during the winter 2-tee starts when we have very limited bookings available.
- Please also care for your course. Raking bunkers, carrying a sand bucket and filling divots with sand and fixing pitch marks are all important things we should all be doing. If you are unsure about how to do any of the above, look online or ask at the pro shop. They also have pitch repairers available for purchase should you not have one.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Looking to lower your score, try this.
If you have 3 wedges, practice hitting with 3 different length swings, and record the distances – half, three quarters, and full. If you put some time and effort into this, it will pay off big time.
Rule of the week (When is a ball in penalty area – Rule 17.1 A)
With more interclub play not too far away, and whether you play interclub or not, this is something that may come up at many other courses you may play at.
A ball is in a penalty area when any part of the ball:
- Lies on or touches the ground or anything else (such as any natural or artificial object) inside the edge of the penalty area, or
- Is above the edge or any other part of the penalty area.
For clarity, when there is a painted line delineating a penalty area, the whole line is inside the penalty area.

Di Neill Bereavement – from Joyce Speedy
Below is an excerpt from an email sent to the Saturday Ladies Group by Joyce a couple of weeks ago, with an email from Di herself before she passed on Monday of this week. Joyce said Di always had a cheeky sense of humour and was on the Saturday’s women’s committee for a couple of years and they knew her as the themed raffles lady!! Rest in Peace Di.
Neville
Hi Saturday Ladies,
I write this with many tears. I have just returned from saying my goodbye to our golfing buddy Di. She knows she is dying so she has asked that I send you the following as she wants to say goodbye to you all, but she is not up to visitors which is most understandable. Di has cirrhosis of the liver and has decided not to take medication as it would only prolong her suffering and lack of quality of life. However, each day her family read out her txts so do feel free to txt her, but can you sign off golfing buddy or Sat Ladies so that the family know who they are from. I have included the Saturday afternoon ladies as I know she played a few times with you. If there is anyone else that you think should know please feel free to pass this on.
We can only hope that her suffering is not prolonged and she is able to peacefully pass away.
I told her you were all thinking of her and that we all love her to bits.
Joyce

To: All my Golfing Friends,
It is now over a year since I played golf at Harewood, having at that time hurt my back. Little did I understand that it was a beginning of a downward slide in regard to my own health. I loved my golf and the fun and friendship that I had with you all. I have really appreciated being part of a wonderful group of mates. I was not the best golfer in the group, but I definitely had a lot of fun chasing that little white ball and socializing with you all. I wish to thank you all for your friendship. I have recently spent a little time in hospital, have been discharged to my lovely home and the future prognosis is not good. I just wanted to touch base with you all that I have loved your company and tell you I am well supported by my family. However, in the words of Andrea Bocelli it is now “Time to Say Goodbye”.
Di’s memorial service is 2pm today Friday May 6th at Our Lady of Victories Catholic Church, 106 Main South Road.
Women’s Interclub Update – from Lesley Hedges
Monday saw the final of the Midweek 18 Hole Silver competition, after a lengthy round robin against nine other teams, from Akaroa to Amberley. The match could not have been closer, with Russley winning on countback by one hole! Despite the result not going Harewood’s way, it was nonetheless a great day of golf, played in an excellent spirit. It was wonderful to see a host of Harewood members on the course, in their red and white uniforms, comprising players, caddies and around eight supporters. The four Russley players plus one caddy must have felt a little outnumbered! Well done, Ladies, you may not have won but you did us proud.
Below is the report from the Canterbury Golf website. Besides those mentioned below, also in the team were Julie Jones, Helen Burne, Diane Chaney and Sue Polson.
The final of the Women's 18 Hole Silver Interclub competition was played at Amberley Golf Club yesterday in perfect, sunny conditions and the course in great order.
The Final was between Russley and last year's Champions Harewood, attempting to go back-to-back and almost did, however Russley had other ideas and after a 3-3 result at the end of regulation 18 holes it came down to a countback of individual holes won on the day which favoured Russley 25-24. So their team of Faye Le Cren, Kathy Seaward, Mary Deakins and Mihee Woo won what couldn't have been a closer Final defeating Harewood's Lynn Brand, Debbie Scott, Liz Warren and Carolyn Rickard.
For our two teams in the Midweek 18 Hole 4s competition, it is the last round of the round robin this Monday at Waitikiri. Harewood 1 is currently a very close fifth. Last year’s winners of the Weekend interclub, the Harewood 2 team, last week won their section and is now in the semi-finals against Russley at Waitikiri on Sunday.
I know you will all give it your best. Good luck.

Tuesday 26 Apr - Combined Stableford MWL’s ANZAC Cup.
Another glorious day for golf. 56 MWL’s and MWM combined for the ANZAC Cup. Not quite even numbers but a very good turnout. Thanks to the Pro Shop staff for your help, and patience, with getting the cards printed ready for the morning. Also, a big thank you to the ladies involved with ANZAC table display. Great to have so many in the club house after the game. Tremendous.

Monday 2 May - Teams Putting - Stroke.
Don’t you hate it when the weather forecast turns out to be accurate and you didn’t want to be! One hole in and it started to rain which lasted for about 4/5 holes and then turned into a glorious day for golf. 26 MWM enjoyed a Teams Putting and Stroke round. The rain slowed the greens down but they sped up once the sun appeared and dried them out. Divots and pitch marks were the only problems - plenty of both unfortunately.
Teams Putting:
1st Jacky Zhang, Chris Straker, Ramiro Guerrero and John Gilmore 30.25

Well, following on from Monday with a forecast of fog clearing around mid-day and I arrived to be greeted with sunny conditions at Harewood which led into a beautiful day - so much for my Monday comments! 31 in today’s field. With a heavy overnight dew, the greens were a little slower than ‘usual’ but some good scores were posted.
