Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
Another weekend and another great day for golf on Saturday – Club Day. We had a packed field and it showed with 3 groups on par 4 holes sometimes. This prompts a reminder to keep up with the group in front which means playing ready golf, especially as we move towards 2 tee starts with short days. Walk to your ball in readiness, select your club, have some practice swings, and get ready to go when it’s your turn, don’t walk as a 4 from players ball to players ball. Don’t dawdle and encourage your group along the way, and most importantly, enjoy your round.
We had a hole in one last weekend on Saturday. Congratulations to Michael Aitken for his hole out on the 6th.
A reminder that this Saturday the Eagles Golf Society raffles will be on sale from about 7:30am. Please support Junior golf in New Zealand through this raffle. Individual tickets are available and whole books can be purchased for $20.
This weekend gone the women had LGU and putting while the men had Blank, Captains, Harewood and Presidents (BCHP) qualifying with the top 16 from each grade going through to the next round in a few weeks.

This weekend is the Harewood 4BBB semi-finals for both men and women. Men others have a stableford round. Women others will be playing coloured ball stableford.
Course and competition information
To follow on from last week’s information in this spot, I would like to follow with a few more things to note, especially if you are new to club golf, but also a reminder for those who have been members for some time.
- If you turn up late to your tee time, you may be asked to move to the end of the days pre-booked tee slots. This is most important moving into the winter 2 tee starts.
- Please be ready with your gear at least 15 minutes prior to your booked tee slot.
- If you can’t make your booking time, please contact the Pro shop if that occurs on Saturday, otherwise update your booking online, or ring the Pro shop.
- For Saturday club golf, please wear a shirt with a collar (men) and similar appropriate attire for women. Tee shirts are OK having a practice round, but not for Club Day.
- Please be considerate of other golfers. The language you use, allowing groups to play through if you are over a hole behind etc. Treat others as you would expect to be treated, we are all there to enjoy our day.
- Do not drive carts through the rough or within 10 metres of greens.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
The old golf saying that states “When you’re in trouble, get the ball back in play and take your medicine” is true. Don’t go for the one in ten recovery shot if you’re not on single figures, it very rarely works out.
Rule of the week (Scoring for Strokeplay – Rule 3.3b)
(2) Player’s Responsibility: Certifying Hole Scores and Returning Scorecard.
During the round, the player should keep track of their scores for each hole. When the round has ended, the player:
- Should check the hole scores entered by the marker,
- Must make sure that the marker signs the scorecard,
- Must not change a hole score entered by the marker except with the marker's agreement or the Committee's approval, and
- Must certify the hole scores on the scorecard and sign the card.
If the player breaches any of these requirements in Rule 3.3b, the player is disqualified.
Refer to the website for more complete information on this rule.

Monday 9 May - Stableford Blind Pairs
With 3 different weather forecasters forecasting similar conditions - Morning showers and afternoon rain/thunderstorms it was agreed that play would be ‘on’. Thankfully for the 31 that turned up, those forecasts were wrong or, perhaps the saying “It never rains on a golf course” is true! It turned out to be a very good day for golf, with sunshine for good periods. Some of the golf wasn’t great! Thanks Annabel for the random pairs selection.

Thursday 12 May - Stableford Hidden Holes
A cool start to the day saw 32 MWM attend our 46th AGM and then enjoy a beautiful day for golf. We had 2 retiring committee members and have 2 new replacement members in Charlie Su and Kevin Stewart. Welcome to you both, and thanks to Kevin Pritchard and Alastair Christie for your assistance. Hidden holes is a good event for a change with 12 unknown holes counting in the results. Some good results.
