Member News – 23 June 2022
Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
A pretty cool start to the day saw everyone looking a little like Michelin men at the start tees last Saturday. The field was fairly packed as well with the first round of the men’s BCHP match play taking place. Well done to those who won and are through to the next round of 8 per grade. It was good to see a few less divot holes unfilled, so thanks to those being vigilant as well as those who are filling the holes of those less caring.
Though we have had some hard frosts this week, we should be OK for Saturday with no rain forecast either. Another reminder to keep play moving along, especially on cold days where we don’t want people hanging around waiting. If you move off a green after putting out, tee off straight away on the next tee, don’t just wait and regroup before hitting. Ready golf is important at this time of year.
This week’s matches of the day are: Men: BCHP Round 2, others Par. Women: FMS Stableford Rnd 5, Grandmothers prize.
Interclub 2022 – Men and women
Thanks to all who have responded and put their names down. We are looking to field the 3 men’s grades again this year. You will be contacted again shortly if you showed interest so we can arrange a practice round and get together. The other good news is that it looks like we will once again have a ladies Pollock Cup team. Well done Lynn Brand for pulling this together.
The finals this year are being hosted by Harewood, so it would be great to have some teams come through from our club this year for that day.
Results for last Saturday
With much of the field playing in the BCHP match play, the other match of the day was a Stableford round. For the women, last Saturday was a coloured ball combined Stableford.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
This week’s tip is how to make more 4 & 5-foot putts. Instead of being indecisive on the line, and tentative with your putting stroke try the following:
Be decisive with your line and then hit a SOLID PUTT (this not only clears the mind it works).

Nett Albatrosses – A story from the course by Gary Charmley
Saturday’s matchplay produced a rare event for Gary Charmley and Nigel Paterson.
Both Gary and Nigel were on the par 4 17th hole for 2. Gary sank a 4 metre putt for a birdie and Nigel sunk his birdie putt from under 2 metres. Both have a handicap which gives them 2 shots on the hole, so both then had nett albatrosses (3 under par) to halve the hole. Unfortunately Nigel needed to win the hole to prolong the match. Great result for both our members and thanks to Gary for contributing this story, still supporting the club after 50+ years of membership!
Juniors Coaching Programme

Q & A with Colin – Greens Superintendent
Q. Colin, sometimes when I hit the green (not often) I can’t find my pitch mark, how long should I keep looking?
A. It can be hard to see them sometimes, but if you look around I am sure you can find at least 2 other pitch marks that you can repair instead. If we all did that then the greens would look much more cared for.
