Member News – 08 July 2022
Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
Greeted with another fine, though cool weekend, the ladies had LGU Rnd 6, Putting, Paterson Salver Rnd 2, while the men all played off the yellow tees for the July Monthly Medal. We experimented with a mid-winter yellow tees round for the men, however it appears to make the field a bit slow with so many shots having to wait for movement of players up ahead. We will review that for next year and maybe move it outside of the 2 tee starts to keep pace of play up.
It looks like Covid is testing us with another round of high numbers in Canterbury. We have several members down with it currently, so we will exercise some leniency where possible for match play competitions.
Breakfast multi-tee start
A reminder that on Saturday 16 July we will be having our annual breakfast multi-tee start stableford competition at 11:00am. This will also double up as the Bells Mugs for the men. Note it is a normal club day in all other match respects. Men and ladies will both pay their normal Saturday match costs. Please support the caterers and join in with fellow members for a catch up prior to the start-time by taking breakfast at the club. Our caterers G & T will offer multiple options and prices to suit all. Breakfast start time and menu details are to come but lock the date and time in now.
This week’s matches of the day are: Men: BCHP semi-final, others 4BBB Stableford. Women: Bisque Par.
AGM
A reminder that the AGM is upcoming on Thursday 14 July this year. You will have seen a note in last week’s Woodlands Word referring you to the website to download and/or review documents for this year’s meeting

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
What to practise to improve your putting
Tour players from 30 feet average 2 putts whereas most club golfers average 3 putts. So next time you have a few minutes, practise 2 putting from 30 feet this will help improve your sense of green reading, speed control and confidence.
Rule of the week (Actions not allowed when playing a ball (Rule 8.1a)

- Tee-marker for the teeing area when playing a ball from that teeing area.
- Move a loose impediment or movable obstruction into position (such as to build a stance or to improve the line of play).
- Alter the surface of the ground, including by:
- Replacing divots in a divot hole,
- Removing or pressing down divots that have already been replaced or other cut turf that is already in place, or

Q & A with Colin – Greens Superintendent
Q. Hey Colin, what is the best way that you think golfers should replace divots on fairways?
A. Collect your grass divot and stamp it firmly back down whenever it is possible.
Q. Oh really, why?
A. We will get better regrowth of the grass and also the loose divots don’t go through the mower blades.
Q. Fantastic Colin, even after having Covid you are still a ball of golfing wisdom.
Juniors Sunday Coaching Winter Break
