Weekly Update – from Club Captain Phil Barlow
The weather did what was forecasted on Saturday with heavy persistent rain setting in after midday. This significantly reduced the number of players in the field. The semifinal BCHP matches were played for the men with some of them being a little one sided, and some having to continue in the conditions to the last holes. With the combination of the weather, the course becoming heavy, and the greens become waterlogged, playing match play becomes tough. There were a couple of matches not played due to the ongoing COVID outbreak and the flu season upon use. These matches should be played prior to the final date in 2 weeks.
A total of 28 men’s pairs played in the 4BBB Stableford competition reflecting the effect of the weather. Unsurprisingly, two of the top three played in the morning before the weather closed in. With the weather being inclement all week, expect wet and heavy conditions on the weekend for the Bell mugs for the men and a combined Stableford for the ladies. This is a multi-tee start form 11.00am. There is a pre match breakfast from the caterers, please contact them to book in. It’s a great start to the day and the 150th Open Championship should be on TV.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
This week’s Tip follows on from last week.
For everyone who is reading this, I have a challenge for you – take one ball onto the putting green and find a putt that is downhill about thirty feet (10 m) and see if you can 2 putt it. This sounds easy but for most it will take a bit of practice.
Rule of the week (Relief for Ball on Putting Green – Rule 16.1 d)
If a player’s ball is on the putting green and there is interference by an abnormal course condition (e.g. abnormal water/puddle) on the course, the player may take free relief by placing the original ball or another ball on the spot of the nearest point of complete relief, using the procedures for replacing a ball under Rules 14.2b(2) and 14.2e.
- The nearest point of complete relief must be either on the putting green or in the general area.
- If there is no such nearest point of complete relief, the player may still take this free relief by using the point of maximum available relief as the reference point, which must be either on the putting green or in the general area.

Thursday 14 Jul- Matt Ryder Bayleys
With sun shining 42 golfers set out to play their best, with plenty to play for. The course was in pretty good condition given the recent rain. There were a couple of surprises with the ‘new’ lake just prior to the 14th green and quite damp halfway up the 18th.
Thank you Matt and Bayleys for your support of the MWM- It is very much appreciated.
Every player received a prize. The top 3 in all divisions only are listed.

Q & A with Colin – Greens Superintendent
Q. Colin, why are the greens running so true and fast at this time of year?
A. Because of the Brown Top “cool season” grass that we used on the greens it performs best in the winter months
Q. Interesting, so does that mean they will slow up when the spring growth starts?
A. We would have to cut and roll the greens every day to keep them like that and we haven’t got the manpower to do this unfortunately. But they will still be good and challenging!!
