Weekly Update – Doug Claridge
The weather had an influence on the first round of men’s club champs qualifying. Steady rain fell for most of the afternoon, making conditions wet for players. On the positive side there was no wind, and the course has held up well with the wet winter we have been having. The forecast for this weekend looks good, sunny with minimal wind with a heavy frost first thing.
There were 62 entries across the 4 grades for the first round with more scheduled to play their first round this weekend. The next 2 weekends are also club champs qualifying rounds. The draw will be posted in the pro shop the week after the final qualifying round and players will be allocated tee times. Please be aware of the match play rounds that are scheduled to play through consecutive weekends in September. If you can’t play a round, by negotiation with your opponent you can play outside of the allocated time, however the match must be completed in readiness for the next round.
With the weather turning wet last Saturday there were several cards not handed in. Not handing your card because you have a bad round has an influence on the potential handicap adjustment for all players on a competition day. It also creates work for the Pro Shop who hunt through all cards handed in to check for any who have been scanned but not saved. In the very least, if you are going to not hand a card in, notify the Pro Shop.
Last Saturday the men had Club Champs qualifying and the others Stableford. The women had LGU Rnd 7, Putting, Paterson Salver Rnd 3.

Interclub 2022
Woodward, Blank and Simon interclub competition kicked off last weekend. Harewood has a team in each grade, however none of them got the result they were looking for.
The Woodward team had a tough fixture with Russley aka Golf HQ first up. Warm temps but swamp like conditions greeted the players at Waitikiri Golf Club. Cameron Gibbons played well and got his Woodward cup campaign off to a flying start, defeating stalwart of the Russley team Andrew Dufton 6/5, well done Cam! Ryan Barham was a little slow out the gates, turning it around in the final 5 holes making 3 birdies and getting a well-deserved half. Dan Lundt and Troy Clarke came up against season campaigners Michael McAuley and Owen Burgess both having losses.
The next 4 matches all going down the last but all needing to win the 13th (last hole) to get something out their games. Harry played well against "Reid Hilton - I had a sore back so hide me at 4" going down 2 down. Kerry also played well, losing 1 down to Taylor Hosking. James Howard, an import this season, played well also until Yuki Miya turning up the heat in the final 5 birdieing 3 of them. Scott meanwhile started like a nervous wreck giving Ben Baker the first 3 holes and that was that. So, a 6 ½ to 1 ½ loss is not an ideal start, and the lads are looking to rebound this weekend against Pegasus at Pegasus.
The first Blank team round for 2022 was against one of last year's stronger sides, Clearwater hosted by one of Canterbury's rural gems, Hororata GC. Even more rain meant that members graciously allowed the course to be closed on the Saturday but despite this it was still very wet underfoot. We had a few debutants in Alex Lundt, Tom Davie and Tim Miller plus "experienced" players in Brad Edmonston, Sam Watkinson, Neville Bamford, Benji Lapslie and Jason Strachan. Tim and Tom had meritorious halves on debut and Sam & Benji both had solid wins. Brad's game went to the wire but we couldn't get a win to halve the match so a loss 5 - 3 to start the new campaign. Next up is a home fixture against Waimairi Beach starting on tees 10 & 11 at 9:30am so hopefully local knowledge will come to the fore on Sunday. Be great to have some Harewood support on the day.
The Simon team had a loss 6-2 to Rangiora at Russley Golf Club. One win and 2 halves, the match could have gone our way with 2 other matches losing in the 18th to be 1 down.
Pollock Cup Update – from Lynley Gainsford
The weather gods played ball last Sunday and we have a lovely sunny day and many of us were in shirt sleeves for most of the day.
Our team of Sally Rossiter, Lynda Brown, Lynn Brand, Debbie Scott, Jo McNicholl and Kirsty O’Neill took on Waitikiri. A huge thanks to the caddies for giving up their time and assisting our players, a true team effort.
Our team did very well keeping the more experienced Waitikiri team at a draw with 3 wins and 3 losses.
This Sunday we take on Clearwater at Russley with a 9.30 Tee Off. The sun is promising to be out again. Just perfect for good golf.
Bring on the 2nd round.
This week, the Woodward Cup team have Pegasus at Pegasus, and the Blank Cup side are playing at home against Waimairi Beach, and Simon have Clearwater at McLeans Island.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
A good way to improve your short game is practice the way you are going to play
So, take the club you would like to chip with and your putter to the chipping part of the putting green (the far side) and chip one ball to a hole then putt out (the goal is to take 2 shots).
Then repeat the process but keep changing the hole you are chipping to (so short medium and long chips) this makes your practice very real and will help you on the golf course.
Rule of the week (Ball Must Be Dropped in Right Way - Rule 14.3 b)
The player must drop a ball in the right way, which means all three of these things:
- Player Must Drop Ball. The ball must be dropped only by the player. Neither the player’s caddie nor anyone else may do so.
- Ball Must Be Dropped Straight Down from Knee Height Without Touching Player or Equipment. The player must let go of the ball from a location at knee height so that the ball:
- Falls straight down, without the player throwing, spinning or rolling it or using any other motion that might affect where the ball will come to rest, and
- Does not touch any part of the player’s body or equipment before it hits the ground.
“Knee height” means the height of the player’s knee when in a standing position.

On Course Work
This week the greens staff will be installing irrigation to the following holes:
1,3,7,11, 13 and 14
They will be using a trenching machine, which means they are unable to deviate from their course. The team will be highlighting the trenching with orange cones to identify the area they are working in.
Please keep in mind the teams safety as they continue to deliver a great course for us all.
