Weekly Update – Club Captain Phil Barlow
It was a “Welcome in summer” feel about last weekend for both days. 20-degree days greeted all golfers, and the jumpers were off, and the shorts and skirts were on. A windy afternoon made it a bit trickier, but the course is starting to dry out nicely for spring and summer golf and has held up well through winter. A great day to start the Club Champs play-offs for men and qualifying for women. Congratulations to all who have made it to the next round of Club Champs for the men and to the women who have qualified now.
A reminder for those that win their matches in Club Champs, keep an eye out for an email or app notification for the tee time for your next round, or contact the Pro Shop.
This Saturday has the second round of Matchplay for the men and the first round of Matchplay for the women’s Club Champs, with all others playing combined Stableford. Please all as usual consider the matches around you, whether Club Champs or not, and if you fall behind by a hole, let those behind you through.
We also farewelled Tabitha from G & T Catering at prizegiving on Saturday as she has moved on to join with Air New Zealand, and flowers were presented, as we know she has made some good friends amongst members with her smile and happy demeanor. We wish her well.
Interclub update
Woodward Cup
Nice day greeting the lads at Russley where we were up against fellow bottom table strugglers Christchurch.
Cameron was up early but end up losing 3n1 with Ryan losing 2n1. Josh had a tough game vs Peter going down. Dan played well but a red-hot Mika MacDonald played too well.
Scott had a nice win 8n6, James turn his match around nicely winning 2up.
Kerry taking another good victory against Richard Reed 2n1. Harry needing a win to give team a half went down 3n1 sadly. 5-3 loss.
We at Harewood this weekend be nice to see some support out there for the team tee off is 8.30am.
Blank Cup
A Blank team that had a few injuries and absences played against Christchurch at Templeton on Sunday. While we had a few out of action, we still had a reasonably strong team, and gave them a good run to go down 5-5. Four of the matches went down the last hole, so the result could have swung the other way, however it was not to be. Otis, Sam, and Brad brought in the wins with some close losses for others. This weekend sees the team at Coringa against Coringa, so will be a solid challenge on their home track. The finals may be all but gone, but there is still a keenness in the players to bring home some wins.
Simon Cup
A beautiful morning over at the seaside at Waimairi Beach.
The Simon team were up against Russley, one of leaders of our section who were without a loss.
It was a close-run battle, with the match at 3 ½Harewood and Russley 3 ½ , it came down to the last putt . Kerry Lake's opposition holing a 10 ft putt for a ½ on the hole to take the match one up. A good effort by the team with wins to Hamish Hodgson 2/1, Andy Lee 2/1 and Doug Claridge 3/2 and a half to Toby Milne secured our 3 ½points. Close losses to Kerry Lake 1down and the other matches going to the 16/17th holes. Waimairi was in great condition with the greens being hard and bouncy making shot selection close to the green a challenge.
This week we are a playing Weedons at Waitikiri. Weedons sit below us on the table and hopefully the team can break the duck and secure a win.
Pollock Cup
Pollock Cup rounds were played again last weekend. Harewood came away with a very impressive win at Rangiora against Russley. The team was Catherine Knight, Sally Rossiter, Lynda Brown, Lynn Brand, Julie Jones and Jo McNicholl. We had 3 wins and 2 halves that gave us a 4-2 Win.
Well done ladies. :)
I also have to say the caddies did a great job looking after their charges and with a very early start being out at Rangiora by 8am and giving up their Sunday was really appreciated.
This Sunday we take on Christchurch at Pegasus. The team will be Catherine Knight, Sally Rossiter, Lynda Brown, Lynn Brand, Debbie Scott and Jo McNicholl.
Let’s go Team Harewood.
A call for old golf balls
A reminder if you have any old golf balls you are happy to donate to the juniors, please drop them into the Pro Shop. There is a big bucket there to collect them so let’s fill it up!

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Good course management can save you lots of shots
If you’re in the rough or under the trees, take a club that will only reach the front of the green and even if it doesn’t bounce up it’s much easier chipping up hill. This is one course where over the green is dead.
Rule of the week (Searching for a lost ball – Rule 10.1 a)
Fairly Striking the Ball
In making a stroke:
- The player must fairly strike at the ball with the head of the club such that there is only momentary contact between the club and the ball and must not push, scrape, or scoop the ball.
- If the player’s club accidentally hits the ball more than once, there has been only one stroke and there is no penalty.

Monday 5 Sept - Stableford
The weather has played a major role in whether games have had to be cancelled (most often) or played. Today’s forecast was no exception with rain and snow (down to 200m), and with early morning rain in both Christchurch and Pegasus, the committee was under pressure to determine the correct decision. It was agreed to play, and this turned out to be a very good decision as it turned out to be quite a nice morning at Harewood. I think it fair to say that all 24 who turned up enjoyed the outing, which was played at record pace, most being finished in 3 ¾ hours. It can be done!!

Thursday 8 Sept - Bisque Par
36 golfers today which was very pleasing to see and a busy clubhouse after we finished including the Thurs. Ladies group. The course is quietly drying out and there is a little more run on the fairways and the greens continue to be excellent. And some more good weather produced some very good scoring.
