Kath Sullivan, Life Member 2 September1937 - 5 October 2022
It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Kath Sullivan, Life Member and Harewood member for 51 years.
Kath joined Harewood Golf Club in 1971, since then she has held every position on the Women’s Committee, including Captain, Secretary and President. She undertook every role with capable efficiency and fastidious attention to detail. She was the first woman on the Match Committee in 1979 and the second woman to receive Life Membership in 1995, after Fay Smith in 1975. In 1981 Kath was elected to the Canterbury District Ladies’ Golf Association and subsequently became Canterbury Selector from 1984 to 1992. She was convener for both the NZ Veterans Foursomes and NZ Amateur Championships in 1982 and 1983 respectively, challenges utilizing her considerable organizational and people skills.
Her illustrious administrative career was matched equally by her golfing successes. She has been Senior Club Champion six times and her name appears at least once on almost every Mid-Week Women’s trophy. She figures prominently in the photographs on the club house walls and on the honours board. She had a hole in one in 1996.
Kath was a stalwart of Harewood Golf Club for decades and was one of the Club’s most staunch supporters. With her trusty shooting stick and dressed proudly in her Harewood uniform, she would be regularly out watching Harewood players at interclub fixtures and club finals. Her knowledge of the rules of golf, etiquette and Harewood history together with her long administrative experience made her an authority on every aspect of the game. This was something Kath always shared willingly and generously, and her opinion was highly valued. If you had Kath’s support, you knew you were on firm ground. One of Kath’s tangible legacies is the disc draw system, which is still used today, ensuring that players are mixed together and so important in building the camaraderie and friendships that are hallmark of our Women’s Section. Another legacy is the Centennial Salver which commemorated 100 years of golf in Canterbury, which Kath, together with Judith Blyth won in 1992 and which they then donated to the club. Harewood women continue to compete for this marvelous piece of history every year.
Kath was farewelled on Wednesday afternoon in a room packed with her family and many friends, including a multitude of Harewood women, many in their red, white and blue uniforms. The speeches all attested to a rich and full life, lived with energy, enthusiasm and a commitment to being the best she could be in every sphere of her life. She was clearly much respected and very much loved.
RIP Kath. You have been a wonderful friend, leader and mentor. We have been blessed to have had you in our club and in our lives.
Janet O’Brien, Judith Blyth and Lesley Hedges
Weekly Update – Club Captain Phil Barlow
Perfect golf weather was the order for last Saturday and with a few up at the Kaikoura Pro Am, the field moved along quite nicely. It was the last day for most before coring and there were some pretty handsome scores posted. It was great to see the fairways in healthy condition after their winter break thanks to Colins team.
A reminder to call the Pro Shop to get a spot for the labour Weekend Shotgun. As usual for this time of year, we run two. The first has an 8:00am start and the afternoon will have a 12:30pm start. Prizes for closest to pins, straightest drives will be in as usual.
It was the completion of interclub golf for our top teams for 2022 as none of them reached the semi’s this year.
This weekend is Holey holes for both men and women with the women’s Allprint Shootout qualifying closing as well. The men have their last qualifying round on Nov 12.

Interclub Update
Woodward Cup – Scott Manyweathers
Last weekend was the last 2 rounds at hosted by Templeton. We played the other 2 bottom teams in lovely weather with the wind picking up in the afternoon.
Ryan, Cam, and Dan all had tough loses in the morning matches where we faced Weedons. Harry continued his good form winning 3/2 with Kerry also having good 6/5 win. Scott and Josh both had good wins at 2 and 1 respectively. It was all hanging on James Howard being all square going down the last against Jonathan Steiller, stalwart of the masters Canterbury team. James hit a great drive on 9th hole and a nice 2nd under the hole. 1st putt looked a little short. Jonathan making bogey and conceding the hole. Harewood lads avoid the relegation game with this 5-3 winning result.
Bottle lake in the afternoon, the pressure was off thankfully. Scott going down last losing 1dwn, Ryan and Kerry both having losses. Dan also losing James had tough match with Canterbury rep player Andrew Green losing on the 17th. Cam get good win, Harry and Josh continue a good day notching another win on the day. Harewood losing 5-3 to bottle lake.
Not the season we wanted but guys certainly hungry to do better next season. Been pleasure managing the team this year.
Blank Cup – Phil Barlow
It was also the last weekend for the Blank team for 2022, and we faced a ‘top half of the draw’ Templeton team. Alex and Jason had tough loses early on, however there were a couple of wins as well with Sam, Brad and Otis getting the better of their opposition, with Otis beating the winner of last year’s Salver plate on the last hole. Toby stepped in from Simon to help the team and both he and Phil went down the last hole, however neither gaining a win to end up 3-5 down in the round. So close again to taking down a top team.
The 2nd round was against a lower table team in Pegasus. With nothing to lose, the boys drew their playing order out of a hat against a team who did the same. Long story short, we had a good 5-3 win with some big match wins amongst it.
Not the ideal season for us all, but thanks to all who took part, played their hearts out, and made the effort on those early morning dual round Sundays.
Pollock Cup – Lynley Gainsford
A great effort by our team last Sunday with a 4.5 to 1.5 win against Avondale at Waimairi.
Great to see some really good scores in the seventy’s from our ladies. The team was well supported by our caddy’s. Thank you so much caddy’s for giving up your Sunday to be there to support and assist the team.
Unfortunately, our team only managed 5th place in the competition this year and missed out a place in the semi-finals. The team is building really well with a number of new players this season. We are looking good for next season.
Happy golfing all.
Pro Tip by Undercover Pro
When playing firmer or wet sand, don’t open the face of your sand wedge as much as you would when playing out of dry sand. Opening your club face in wet sand will expose more of the club bounce and you are more likely to knife your shot.
Rule of the week
You can touch the sand in a bunker… sometimes (Rule 12.2)
Golfers can now touch the sand in a variety of instances without worry, so long as they’re not purposely attempting to test the sand while they’re doing it.
Among the things that are now permitted:
- Placing a club or other equipment in the sand (if you’re between clubs and you drop one you’re not using, it’s fine if it’s in the bunker).
- Hitting the sand in anger or frustration (it’s not a great look, but doesn’t come with a penalty).
- Leaning on a club in a bunker (as when you might be waiting for another player to hit a shot).
- Digging your feet into the sand when preparing to hit a shot.
- Removing loose impediments like pebbles, leaves and pinecones (provided you don’t cause the ball to move in doing so).
Conversely, here’s what you still aren’t allowed:
- Grounding your club at address in the sand prior to the stroke.
- Touching the sand during a practice swing or with your backswing.
- Deliberately touching the sand to test its condition or learn information to help you in making your next stroke.
Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2022 programme).

A sudden loss and will be missed by all.
Monday- Coring 10th Oct. McLeans Island.
Although I wasn’t there, about 20 Played at McLeans Island and it appears that they all were welcomed and had an enjoyable day. A lot of comments about how good the course looked and played.
Thursday- Coring 13th Oct. Waimairi Beach.
Today another 20 joined in the Thursday Waimairi Beach competition. The first comments were about the ‘lower’ handicaps due to Waimairi’s rating. Whilst that didn’t make things any easier, some had some great results.
From Harewood:
Division 1 5th Charlie Su 39
11th Hunter Liu 37
Division 2 1st John Keepa 42
3rd John Yates 40
