Weekly Update – Club Captain Phil Barlow
With the scribes for the Saturday golf being away, we have a bit of catch up for the last 2 Saturday comps, as below.
Sat 22 October
Small fields for the annual Cancer Charities Shotgun Stableford were the order of the day. Kim Dale and Gary Charmley looked pretty in pink as the took the supporting cancer charities to dressing up!
The conditions did not disappoint. A lighter NE wind, and a golf course that has recovered extremely well for being 2 weeks post coring. I would expect the greens to improve as the grass grows for the busy next few weeks. I suspect many players were left a little flummoxed on the bobble of a dying putt taking a sharp turn away from the hole as I was on Saturday.

Upcoming weekend golf notes
Men’s shootout qualifying closes after next Saturday’s round (12 Nov).
Saturday 19 November is Ladies Closing day with a prizegiving after their round. Be aware that there is a large group teeing off from 11:00am until about mid-day. This will however open all of the morning ladies tee slots for any members to book into.
A reminder that the Canterbury men’s interclub finals day for Woodward, Blank and Simon is held on Sunday 20th of November which will close the course. Unfortunately, Harewood is not being represented in any the grades in the Interclub this year.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
This week’s tip is how to make more 4- & 5-foot putts.
Instead of being indecisive on the line and tentative with your putting stroke try the following be decisive with your line and then hit a SOLID PUTT (this not only clears the mind, it works.)
Happy golfing!!
Rule of the week
No Deliberate Testing of Greens (Rule 13.1 e)
During a round and while play is stopped under Rule 5.7a, a player must not deliberately take either of these actions to test the putting green or a wrong green:
- Rub the surface, or
- Roll a ball.
Exception – Testing Greens When between Two Holes: Between two holes, a player may rub the surface or roll a ball on the putting green of the hole just completed and, on any practice green (see Rule 5.5b).
Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2022 programme).
5 Nov – Men: Monthly Medal (Blue tees). Women: Coloured Ball Stableford
12 Nov – Men: Stableford (Shootout closes). Women: Greensome
19 Nov – Men: Blind 4BBB Stroke. Women: Closing day Stableford, Afternoon tea prizegiving. All players taking part teeing off from 11:00am.
26 Nov – Men: Irish Stableford. Women: Yellow/White tees option – stroke
27 Nov – Allprint Shootout Sunday (men and women), Metro B interclub
Enjoy your golf.
Midweek Mens Results – from Peter Larkin
With the Police Golf Champs on at Harewood Sun. thru Wed., 25 Mid Week Men played out at McLeans Island Golf Course. Whilst there was no ‘official comp.’ organised for the day, a stableford game was played. McLeans was in very good condition although the greens were much slower with quite a bit of grass, recovering from coring a few weeks earlier. Playing McLeans makes you appreciate the ‘wide’ fairways Harewood offers its members.
Thursday- 3rd Nov. Stroke.
32 in today’s field having to content with a ‘good old Nor’ Wester’! Quite blustery at times and the scores reflected the conditions. This week has been like the traditional weather that we aways got for Show Week! More please.
The course is looking very good post the Police Nationals’. The greens are recovering well although a little too paced.

Club Life
We have a big week with the National Police Association Golf Tournament. 110 player, 4 Days of great golf…for some, fantastic weather, plenty of stories and the feedback from everyone was that the course was fantastic! Overall, a great tournament was had by all.
Thanks also to Rob and his team of Midweek Men for manning the BBQ on each of the 4 days.
We then finished the week with one of our great sponsors FANZ/SBS and their corporate golf day.
