Weekly Update – Phil Barlow
A smaller Woodlands Word this week due to the terrible weather last Saturday that closed the course for us all. We are looking better for this Saturday though some afternoon showers are forecast, along with some showers for Shootout Sunday as well.
We had some very positive feedback from Canterbury Golf and players regarding the condition of our course for the interclub finals last Sunday. Well done to Colin and the greenkeeping staff for setting up a course that was worthy of finals golf.
We are still trying to find 2 of the key men’s trophies that appear to be misplaced. If you have won either the Blank Cup or Presidents Trophy over the past few years, please check that you don’t still have it hiding away somewhere at home. It would be great to have these back in the cabinet for our Centenary year next year.
Upcoming weekend golf notes
- Allprint Harewood Shootout Sunday is this Sunday (27 November) for both men and women. Metro B will be teeing off prior to that starting for a home round of interclub.
There may be very limited tee slots later in the morning or early afternoon depending how the Shootouts move along. Check with the Pro Shop.
- Closing Day Shotguns are fast approaching so be prepared to come along and play your way into some great prizes on the day. Check the poster on the Pro Shop window for details, and give your name to the Pro Shop to be in.
- Men’s Monthly Medal winners final will be on 3 December, so if you have won any of these over the year, you will be advised of a tee time for the finals day.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Change two things to hit the ball lower
Next time you’re hitting into a two-club wind and it’s an eight-iron distance – hit a six iron and make a three-quarter backswing and a three-quarter follow through. By reducing the speed of your swing, it reduces the backspin on the ball, so it flies lower.

Monday- 21st Nov. Christmas Hamper Stableford
A great turnout in support of this years Christmas Hamper with 44 in the field. The weather behaved to presenting a very pleasant day with little wind. The course was in pretty good condition given the rain that dissented on Saturday. Christchurch Airport reported one month’s rain in just one day!! And given Harewood hosted all three interclub finals on Sunday, the course has bounced back very well with only one ‘puddle’ and a few damp areas- Thank you greenkeeping staff.

My final MWM’s report as Club Captain. Unfortunately, I am on the injury list from Monday’s game and was unable to attend plus getting ready for our pending move!
25 today off the white tees and 2 from the yellow in conditions that should have been very pleasant.
It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to have been in this since 2019- Something I had been asked about whilst still away in Noosa that year. With the assistance of a very good and capable committee, the MWM’s group has attracted a number of new members and explored a number of variations of game formats. After some 20 odd years (I started around 1964 at Harewood- Sunday Junior Golf until other things got in the way!!), I will miss very much what this club has on offer- Several course redesigns (Old Course), gathering stones on the New Course, Greg Turners current layout with its challenging greens, and most of all, the members that I have come to know and Harewood’s staff. Thank you all.
