Member News –3 February 2023
Weekly Update – Phil Barlow
This weekend sees the first of the Centenary events for Harewood GC for 2023 with our opening day shotgun starts, followed by a BBQ dinner. The forecast is for a hot day (32 deg), so make sure you have plenty of fluids and sunscreen at hand. Our centenary golf shirts are up for sale in the Pro Shop from Saturday so have a look when you arrive at the course.
We mentioned in the last issue that our membership and green fee users are increasing, and one of the flow-on effects is that you will need to book to play on Sunday’s rather than just turn up. The days of rolling up on a Sunday for a round have gone, so please avoid disappointment and jump online and book, or call the Pro Shop. You should really call to check on any day as there are often events during the week as well.
Twilight golf at Harewood had its first round of six this week for the post-Christmas competition. Remember to call the Pro Shop to book in for the remaining 5 rounds as the field is usually full ahead of time.
A reminder that this year’s programme book is now available in the Pro Shop, so make sure you get one to stay in touch with what is happening and when.
Saturday results
The men played a Stableford round last Saturday while the women had the first round of many of their year’s competitions kick off as part of their Opening Day with LGU Nett being the main competition. Shootout entries also opened last weekend for men and women, and we will leave entries open for a few weeks before cutting it off for the year. Be in to have a shot at great prizes available for this event.

Well done to you all
New R & A golf rules for 2023
For the next couple of Woodlands Words, we thought we would bring to you some of the updates that are now in play as of the start of 2023.
Back-on-the-Line Relief Procedure: The back-on-the-line relief procedure, often used for penalty area and unplayable ball relief, has been simplified so that the player now drops their ball on the line, and the ball must come to rest within one club-length of where it is dropped. The ball does not have to move backward or sideways as part of the drop, as long as it is no closer to the pin than where you picked the ball up from.
Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2023 programme – out soon).
4 Feb – Centenary Opening Day Shotgun. 8:00am and 12:30pm starts – mixed team Stableford. See article above.
11 Feb – Men: Monthly Medal (Blue tees). Women: Jean Tench All Irons Stroke, others Strokeplay.
18 Feb – Men: Harewood 4BBB Qualifying Rnd 1, others Strokeplay. Women: Harewood 4BBB Qualifying, others Combined Stableford.
25 Feb – Men: Harewood 4BBB Qualifying Rnd 2, others Stableford. Women: Centenary FMS Stableford Rd 1.
4 Mar – Men: Monthly Medal – Black, Blue and White tees. Women: LGU Rnd 2, Eclectic Rnd 2, Putting, Paterson Salver Rnd 1 Homelinks, National Teams event.
Enjoy your golf.
Club Updates – from the General Manager
Clubhouse – It’s been great to see everyone take part in the open days this week and seeing the clubhouse being used by our members. In addition to this we have had several groups use the conference rooms in the last few weeks. As a result, the caterers made over 300 meals for these groups, a great start to the year and creates a good atmosphere in the clubhouse.
Blow Down Area - Work on the new blow down area including a new sand bucket stand near the 18th will start in the week of the 13 February. The construction team are aware that this will be an active area, but please be aware of the work being completed. If all goes to plan it will be completed early March.
Food & Beverage Review –Thank you to those who filled out the survey. We had 91 replies from our members. We have reviewed the feedback and you may have already seen some new offerings in the cabinet this week, plus there will be more to come in the coming weeks.
9 Hole Ladies Results – from Lisa Neho-Smith
We had a lovely warm day for our opening day on Wednesday and were very grateful the sun stayed behind the clouds.
We played a Stableford for the Anne McKenna Trophy, which was won on countback by Erica O'Donnell on 21stabefords, and runner up was Kay Worley also on 21 stablefords.
Due to work commitments, I will be stepping down as 9 hole ladies co-ordinator and the lovely Kay Worley will be taking on the role.
Thank you to all those who have guided me over the past year.
