Weekly Update – Club Captain Phil Barlow
The early starters are having to battle the morning dew now, and that was evident for the 80 odd starters for the morning players in last weekend’s Centenary Shotgun. That being said, the weather was fantastic all day, and in fact all weekend for golf. At the risk of repeating myself, its great to see so many well played rounds in the results as we continue to have great weather and a great course to play on. There may be some much lower handicaps being played to moving into winter.
While it is a little early, if you are considering playing for one of the top 3 men’s interclub teams this year (Woodward, Blank, and Simon Cups), have a chat with one of the managers from last year or touch base with the Pro Shop and they will steer you to one of them. Last years managers were Scott Manyweathers, Phil Barlow and Doug Claridge. Whether they are managing this year or not, they can help out with any questions about the competitions that kick off early August. It’s a great way to play Matchplay competition and at different courses each round.
This weekend club golf sees some men playing the Harewood 4BBB Rnd 2, with the others playing Stableford, and for the women, Centenary FMS Stableford Rnd 2.

We had a total of 14 2’s on the day and the morning Nett Eagles went to Terry Smith for hole 2, and in the afternoon, it was Terry Coleman for hole 7. Have a look on the noticeboard for all results.
Well done to you all
Rule of the week
The rule of the week, this week, is more about knowing local rules of where you are playing. For example, Waitikiri GC has a local rule through autumn where is you know your ball went into a pile of leaves, you can take a drop as close to where you think it may have ended up.
Some clubs play the out of bounds (OOB) rule that allows you to drop a replacement ball near the edge of the fairway, then play your 4th shot. We talked this though at the Harewood Match Committee, and decided to stay with the status quo, and not implement that new rule.
So if in doubt, check the rules board where you are playing, as there is usually one available, or just ask your playing partners, as one of them should know.
Pro Tip of the week - Craig Mitchell
Learn to play the bump and run!
Sometimes the hardest shot is when the pin is at the front of the green and you are 5 or six steps off the green. With the fringes being so wet, take a 7 or 8 iron and bump the ball along the ground, keeping in mind that the ball needs to bounce at least twice before it hits the green (this will break its back, so it runs more like a putt when it hits the putting surface). Learning this shot can save you 3 or 4 strokes a round.

Club News – General Manager
I have been talking with our Pro shop team and there a few matters we feel requires highlighting to ensure the enjoyment of everyone’s play is continued. If you can all ensure you take these into consideration when playing that would be appreciated.
- Speed of Play – Be aware of who is in front of you and allow people to pass through if they are playing faster than you are. Be polite if you are asking to move past a group, we all want to enjoy our golf!
- As the course is becoming busier, please ensure you book a tee time in advance online or contact the Pro Shop team over the phone.
- Please ensure you repair your pitch marks, we all need to play our part in keeping the course in great shape. If you don’t have a tool the pro shop have them in stock.
- Saturday Golf – Please arrive on time and if you are not playing, please cancel your booking to allow other people to play.
- The Pro Shop now have the new season gear for those who like to look sharp on the course. Make sure you call in see what’s on trend.
- Centenary Shirts are selling fast, it’s great to see those who have brought one wearing them on the course when they play each week. We have our last order of shirts arriving soon…. So don’t miss out on the limited-edition Centenary shirts!
Thank you everyone.
