Weekly Update – By Doug Claridge
Those playing on Saturday’s Easter shotgun would have heard the load cheers for Allan Double’s first shot of the day; an ace on the par 3 15th hole. I believe that this is Allan’s first hole in one in 50+ years as a member at Harewood Golf Club. A quick search of the odds in Google for a hole in one gives the odds of 1: 12500, it was difficult to find the odds of hitting an ace on your first shot, but I am sure this would increase your odds. Well done, Allan.
Our course continues to be in great condition, now autumn has arrived the fairways are softening. It was noticeable playing a couple of rounds over the Easter break of the number of unrepaired divots, and the number of players not carrying as sand buckets. Please keep our course fairways in the good condition by carrying a sand bucket and repairing your divots and for those who are too lazy to repair them!
Good luck to the Metro B interclub team who are playing the final of the Canterbury Metro Interclub competition on Sunday at McLeans Island. Tee off is 10.00am against Avondale. Please get out and support this team to help them get a win in this competition. Well done for making the finals.
The Harewood 4BBB competition is moving towards the business end of the competition this weekend. The men are into the 3rd round, and the ladies are into the 2nd round to decide the semifinalists in a months’ time.

Pro Tip of the week - Craig Mitchell
Club yourself for the conditions
After watching this year’s Masters tournament, it really was amazing, especially on the third round with the cold/wet/windy and rainy conditions, how far the ball wasn’t going and what clubs the best and strongest players in the world were hitting. I think the club golfer could learn a lot about club selection wise. When its cold, wet and windy, sometimes you must hit three or four clubs more, so if it’s a nine iron in summer conditions it could well be a six or a five in June or July in Christchurch. So, in conclusion, club yourself for the conditions and get your approach shots on the green not thirty metres short.
Rule of the week – (Rule 7.1a/1) Examples of Actions Unlikely to Be Part of a Fair Search
With the rough getting a bit more lush at this time of year, this rule comes into play more than normal, so take note when you are playing from a less than desirable position on the course.
Examples of actions that are unlikely to be considered reasonable as part of a fair search, and will result in the general penalty (2 strokes in strokeplay) if there is an improvement to conditions affecting the stroke, include:
- Taking an action to flatten areas of grass beyond what is reasonably necessary to walk through or search for the ball in the area where the ball is thought to lie.
- Purposely removing any growing thing from the ground, or
- Breaking a tree branch to allow easier access to the ball when it could have been reached without doing so.

Its time for the Winter coat to be applied to the course. Mowing heights will be risen, this is to keep a good sward of turf to help protect against the winter elements. So, for the next 2-3 weeks while this transition occurs, the course will be looking a little bit rougher as growth slows down.
