Weekly Update – By Club Captain Phil Barlow
It was great to see former member Scott McKenzie and his wife Heather out on-course in a cart following one of the men’s 4BBB semi-finals. You will recall a fundraiser earlier in the year to help Scott and Heather take a train trip around much of the country before Scott’s mobility does not allow this.
Saturday golf saw the jersey’s come out as we head into cooler days. The course was playing as we have become to expect lately with well rolling greens to keep us all on our toes when reading putts. We are still putting lots of club members through on a Saturday with 160 playing last weekend in the competitions of the day.
The finalists of the men’s 4BBB have been found with a small delay in finding the women’s. Congratulations to the pairs of Justin Cotter and Graeme Calvert who will be playing Norm McTaggart and David Ott. I would also like to thank Charlie Su and William Lin for being so understanding and waiting nearly an hour after the programmed tee time for their semi-final against Justin and Graeme, as Justin’s flight into Christchurch was delayed. The first women’s 4BBB finalist pair has been found with Hyeza Kim and Kerrie Cady winning their match last weekend.
This weekend has the men’s Harewood 4BBB finals with others playing 4BBB Par. The ladies will be playing 4BBB. The ladies 4BBB final will take place in due course due.

Pro Tip of the week – Undercover Pro
Select the right side of the tee box
It may sound a bit crazy but depending on the shape of your shot off the tee, you should favour one side or the other of the tee box. If you hit a fade or cut, tee up on the right-hand side of the tee box, and if you hit a draw, tee up on the left-hand side.
It may sound counterintuitive, but it will give you more room particularly when there are trees close by.
Rule of the week – (Rule 18.3) Provisional Ball)
The provisional ball process in the rules of golf can be hard to understand. If you suspect your ball is out of bounds or might be lost, you can hit a provisional shot.
You must announce it to your playing partners and only play it if your first shot is OB (out of bounds) or lost.
This helps with the pace of play. Instead of having to walk about to the original location, you can simply play the provisional ball and take the penalty (stroke & distance).
It’s the caveats to Rule 18.3 that make this rule strange.
- First, you cannot hit a provisional shot if you think your ball ended up in a hazard.
- Second, if you find your first shot, you can’t choose to take the penalty and play your provisional. This is the part that is frequently messed up by golfers.
Once you find your first ball (in bounds), your provisional shot is “dead”. It cannot be used.

Women’s National Teams Event Regional Winners! - By Lesley Hedges
The highlight for our section last month was our team winning the National Teams Event regional finals at Weedons on 28 April. Harewood’s team of Taff Maloney, Liz Warren, Amy Liu and Marie Bell were clear winners of this prestigious event, two shots ahead of the runners up, in a field of 88 players.
Whilst the team comprised players with the best individual nett scores on a given day, the format for the finals was Four Ball Best Ball. Amy and Marie finished with a very creditable nett 69 and Taff and Liz combined superbly to finish with a nett 62.
The national winners will be determined from the regional scores after the end of May when all regional finals will have been played. Well done Ladies! An outstanding result.
