Last night we hosted the clubs 67th AGM. A great turnout of over 80 people attended the evening. A great atmosphere, plenty of positive feedback and conversations from everyone proving what a great club this is.

Weekly Update – By Club Captain Phil Barlow
Another drizzly day greeted the hardy last Saturday with a heavy track. The women played a Hidden Holes Stroke round while the men had a 4BBB Stableford competition. Again, most members are making the effort to look after the course pitch marks and divots, so we all thank you for your efforts, but let’s all be diligent.
One of the annual key events, the men’s BCHP handicap matchplay finalists were found last weekend, and the finals are to be played on 22 July. The finalists are:
Blank: Doug Claridge vs Terry Coleman
Captains: Bill Wekking vs Mitch Holland
Harewood: John Gold vs Graeme Clarke
Presidents: Freeman Fang vs Tony Ralfe
Ready golf
We had a couple of slow groups that especially on a day like last Saturday meant that following groups were always waiting and getting colder and wetter by the hole. It doesn’t matter whether you are playing a match or a stableford round, please, please consider others and keep up with the group in front. If you cannot keep up with the group in front, the group behind is entitled to play through, so you must call them through. Losing 1 ½ holes by the 10th hole is not acceptable with a full field in particular, so let’s all start thinking about ready golf. It is encouraged in the R & A rules of golf (https://www.randa.org/pace-of-play/manual/2-management-practices#5-ready-golf), and speeds up play for everyone. While there are certain rules regarding order of play in Matchplay, there are other things that can help, such as; having others watch you’re tee shots, hit provisional balls if unsure of where your shot finished, score on the next tee, etc. Let’s all consider our clubmates!
Men’s Interclub – second trial
We had about 20 turn out on another drizzly day for the first interclub trial – thanks to all that could make it considering the conditions. We have another trial next Sunday from 10:00am. I have contacted all that I am aware of that are interested, but if you are on a handicap of about 9 or less, and interested, please contact me at phil.barlow@gmail.com or txt me at 021488993 if you have not received an email and are keen.
Men’s Club Champs
A reminder about how the upcoming men’s club champs qualifying works. With so many members, we ask that you notify the Pro Shop of 2 of the 3 qualifying Saturday rounds (Aug 5th, 12th, and 19th) that you wish to play. These dates will be strictly adhered to unless you have a legitimate reason to change one after already selecting your dates. Changes will need to be passed via the Match Committee to be considered. The top 16 of each grade will go forth to the finals matchplay. If you can please let the Pro Shop know your 3 dates by 25 July it would be appreciated so the Pro Shop can set aside tee slots.
This weekend’s competition is a Centenary multi-tee start but with a men’s and women’s Stableford competitions. Men have Bell Mugs and it is Linney Trophy for women, with a breakfast from 9:00am and group tee off at 11:00am. Here’s hoping for some nicer weather than last week.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell
If you want to make golf easier read the following:
Recently I have convinced a lot of my regular lesson clients to have 2 hybrids in their bag to cover their 4 & 5 iron distances, with 6 being the first iron in the bag.
The results and feedback have been amazing and the confidence they now have is huge, as they really feel like they like cheating because they just are so easy to hit.
Rule of the week – Alternative to Stroke and Distance for Lost Ball or Ball Out of Bounds (Local Rule E5)
This is mainly for the benefit of newer club members, but also a reminder for those that are not so new.
Some golf clubs both here and overseas have implemented what is known as “Local rule E5” for lost or out of bounds balls. This allows 2 penalty shots to be added, and placement of a ball near the fairway and no closer to the hole, rather than having to replay your shot. Harewood has not implemented this local rule. Any local rules are printed on your card, and any temporary rules, such as the unmarked GUR while the trees are being removed, should be on the noticeboard across from the Pro Shop by the walkway to the 10th tee.
Upcoming Saturday golf (for full details refer to the 2023 programme).
