Weekly Update – By Club Captain Phil Barlow

We seem to have alternating weekend weather at the moment, so as those who played will contest, it was pretty miserable last Saturday for club golf. Cold with lots of rain made it a difficult track, even with the fairways having been mown, so here’s hoping this weekend is a good one.

I hope many of you watched The Open last weekend as it was certainly entertaining watching professional golfers playing a tough links course at Royal Liverpool. Brian Harmon was certainly testament to not having to be the longest hitter on course, rather, be a good ball striker and find fairways. It would be fair to say his putting was stoic as well!  Great to see New Zealand represented with Dan Hillier and Ryan Fox making the event with Foxy making the cut.

Men’s Club Champs

A last reminder if you haven’t registered your 2 of 2 days for qualifying, you have probably missed the 5^th Aug round, but could make the last 2 rounds being the 12^th and 19^th August. Let the Pro Shop know ASAP if you want to have a go.

The ladies also have an entry sheet up in their changing room for club champs qualifying rounds, so please put your names up there.

Three of the four finals were played last weekend for the men’s BCHP match play competition. In the Blank grade, Terry Coleman won over Doug Claridge 2/1, for the Harewood grade, Graeme Clarke beat John Gold 5/4, and for the Presidents grade, Freeman Fang won 5/4 over Tony Ralfe. Well done to all who made the finals, and particularly the winners. The Captains grade final is this weekend. All trophies will be presented after the afternoon shotgun Closing Day competition.

On a sadder note, we lost one of our members last week with the passing of Barbara Ford. We are thinking of her family and friends at this time of loss.

This weekend’s competition for men is Monthly Medal from the white tees. The women this week have a Stroke round.

Two’s last Saturday earned $30 each. Nett Eagles was hole 18 and jackpots as it was not struck.

In the end it all comes down to putting and that was a huge part of why Brian Harman is the Open Champion Golfer of the year for 2023.

In professional golf they have a stat for everything – Brian Harman missed one putt from inside ten feet for 4 rounds, which is ridiculously good putting under pressure. So for me, you can hit the balls miles like all the young players on tour do, but if you can’t back it up with awesome putting your leaving shots on the table. Having said that, put some practise in on your short putting from three to ten feet and watch your score come tumbling down.

Rule of the week – Relief for Ball in General Area (Rule 16.1b)

This week’s rule is regarding how to take relief from abnormal ground conditions. I was thinking particularly about casual water but applies for other conditions as well.

If a player’s ball is in the general area and there is interference by an abnormal course condition on the course, the player may take free relief by dropping the original ball or another ball in this relief area (see Rule 14.3):

• Reference Point: The nearest point of complete relief in the general area.
• Size of Relief Area Measured from Reference Point: One club-length, but with these limits:
• Limits on Location of Relief Area:
  • Must be in the general area,
  • Must not be nearer the hole than the reference point, and
  • There must be complete relief from all interference by the abnormal course condition.

In Memory - Barbara Ford

Sadly Barbara passed away last week. She had been a long standing and much valued member of the Saturday morning women’s group until illness forced her to retire from golf a couple of years ago. At one time she was convenor for the morning group and was a keen participant in both golfing and social events. Her quiet sense of humour and practical common sense earned her the respect and affection of her many friends.

Midweek Men – By David Williams-Jones

The first of a few changes came into effect today with our first Nearest the Pin Sweepstake. Tomas Hruby pocketed over $40 for his chip on Hole 2.

The MWM are open to all and we are hoping that any new members would look to join us on a Monday or Thursday morning. The group consists of all ages and golfing abilities. Groups involved in Monday competitions are made up from balls drawn at the time. As a change, for those who feel comfortable playing with old friends before making new ones, groups and tee times can now be booked within our competition slot in the normal way; for the rest, it is still drawn balls.
