Weekly Update – By Club Captain Phil Barlow
The snow on the hills is certainly keeping the temperatures down for golf now after a few mild weekends. With many of the men and women playing gross and nett rounds, there was a bit of pressure on players to keep up with speed of play. Remember to keep up with the group in front, not ahead of the group behind. If you are on a par 4 and on the tee with the group in front already putting or leaving the green ahead, you will need to make an effort to speed up a bit. On saying all that, we have a lot of Club Champs qualifying and match play coming up so please also be a bit patient. We didn’t do too bad last Saturday considering the competitions being played. The good news is that we are only about a month away from summer tee times again where we get more tee times and no crossover.
The men’s Club Champs qualifying round 2 is this weekend with the 3rd and final qualifying round the following weekend. A reminder that Shootout is suspended for all Club Champs weekends for the men.
A reminder the ladies have an entry sheet for club champs qualifying up in the changing room, so please put your names up there if you are interested.
Interclub report
The Canterbury men’s interclub season started last weekend with the best start Harewood GC has ever had. All 3 men’s teams had good wins.
Woodward Cup – Manager Scott Manyweathers
First game of Woodward cup saw Harewood up against Bottle Lake at Templeton. Congratulations to Otis Holland for his first Woodward win, winning 2up. James, Scott, and Kerry also having good wins. Dan and Ryan having narrow losses. Harry made a good birdie down his last hole (13th) to get an important half and Josh also getting a half. All up the team had great win 5-3. A big thanks to Dave Shipley and Terry Coleman for coming out and supporting us.
Blank Cup – Manager Phil Barlow
Played at Pegasus with Templeton first up meant the team were expecting a hard task aheasd of themselves. That wasn’t how the results ended up with a 6-2 win to Harewood. Toby had a hard task at No 1 going down 3/2 after being 5 down against a big hitting opponent. Brad (5/3), Liam (1 up), Neville (2/1), Phil (3/2), and Sam M (5/3) all having wins with Sam W and Jason securing halves. A great start to the season and looking forward to playing at Christchurch GC next Sunday against Hororata.
Simon Cup – Manager Doug Claridge
The Simon team started their season with a home game against Russley. Having a home advantage helped with some local knowledge of our greens gaining a win 3 1/2 to 2 1/2.
Simon Cup debutants Jordan Wilson (3/1) and James Anderson 2/1) had good wins at 1 and 2, Doug Claridge (5/3) at 8 and Richard Hurley got the important half to secure the wins. The course challenged the young Russley team in great conditions.
Pollock Cup starts this weekend with the Harewood team taking on Russley at Russley at 9:30am Sunday from the first tee.
This weekend’s competition for men: Club Champs Rnd 2, others Par and for women: International Stableford.

Ten players had two’s last Saturday and earned $27 each. Nett Eagles was hole 12 again and the dollars were split 3 ways.
Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell
A reminder seeing as the ground is still heavy.
What happens to your ball flight if you have mud on one side of your ball?
It sounds counterintuitive but if you have mud on the left of the ball the ball will go to the right, and the opposite applies if the mud is on the other side of the ball.
Rule of the week – Relief from abnormal conditions 16.3a (2)
Determining Whether Ball Is Embedded.
This rule is relevant for winter golf. A player’s ball is embedded only if:
- It is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of the player’s previous stroke, and
- Part of the ball is below the level of the ground.
If the player cannot tell for sure whether the ball is in its own pitch-mark or a pitch-mark made by another ball, the player may treat the ball as embedded if it is reasonable to conclude from the available information that the ball is in its own pitch-mark.

To finish up, last weekend I was at Pegasus playing interclub, and as I walked past a couple of older guys, one said to the other “My game is going so bad, I had to take my ball retriever to the Pro to get it regripped”!
Enjoy your golf.
