I am pleased to announce that Jennian Homes Canterbury will continue to be the naming sponsor of our public Driving Range until 2025. Dwayne and the team at Jennian Homes have been keen supporters and look forward to continuing their relationship with the Harewood Golf Club. Watch this space for more announcements.
Club Development Plans - Opportunities
As you will all have seen over the past few months, we have presented the future developments of the Harewood Golf Club.
- Club Strategy
- Course Plan
- Club House Plan
- Driving Range plan – To be announced in October.
As a result, we have a lot of fundraising and work to be completed to ensure this can all be delivered over the next few years. This will take a team of many to make this happen so all club members can enjoy the result of the work completed to date.
It is fitting that it is our Centenary year, and we are looking forward to many more. So, I would like to invite all members to either contact me directly or one of the board members if you would like to be involved in this exciting stage of our club!
Whether you are a potential sponsor, donor, supplier, or contractor who has the skills to help with building, gib stopping, painter, floor laying, supplies trees, lighting, concreter or has skills that could contribute to any of these projects please let us know and will ensure you are included in the communication around the work being done here at the club.
Your support and involvement will be appreciated!

Club Captain Weekly Update – by Phil Barlow
It was a beautiful weekend for golf for both Club Day Saturday as well as out teams playing interclub. We will include a small round up of our top team’s progress through the interclub season, and if possible, get out and catch a round or two to support the Harewood teams.
The field was full last Saturday, and round times suffered being nearly 5 hours towards the end of the day. We all need to be thinking of ready golf on these days, especially when the weather has no part to play. There were a couple of groups that had dropped a hole by the 7th hole. If you are in one of these groups and the low handicapper, it is your job to push your group along.
A reminder the ladies have an entry sheet for club champs qualifying up in the changing room, so please put your names up there if you are interested, as qualifying round 1 starts 26 August.
Interclub report
The Canterbury men’s and women’s interclub season is underway. Below are the reports from team managers.
Woodward Cup – Manager Scott Manyweathers (Currently 7th)
It was a home game for the Woodward team against Clearwater. Results didn’t go our way with Scott losing 2 down, Josh having a good win 3/2 vs Cooper. James, Ryan and Harry having narrow losses. Dan and Kerry both having big wins and Otis going down 4/3. Clearwater winning 5-3. Thanks for those familiar faces that came out to supported the team - much appreciated. This Sunday is against Russley at Clearwater.
Blank Cup – Manager Phil Barlow (Currently 2nd)
We arrived to what looked like snowfall at Shirley GC and had a 45 min frost delay. As we worked through the day it looked as though it was going to be a close loss. However, there were a couple of good turn arounds to give us a 5-3 win over Hororata. A strong effort all around to keep us up the table. This weekend is against Christchurch at Russley.
Simon Cup – Manager Doug Claridge (Currently 6th)
The Simon team had a bye last weekend. Next weekend’s match is against Bottle Lake at Bottle Lake.
Pollock Cup – Manager Lynley Gainsford (Currently 2nd)
The team had a great result of a 4/2 win against Russley at Russley last Sunday.
With the average age of the Russley team being 15 and our team considerably more it was great to see experience and patience win against youth and enthusiasm.
Thank you to our caddies who make everyone’s job much easier. Also nice to see supporters out there, thank you.
This Sunday we play Waitikiri at Christchurch. It is looking to be a nice sunny day with nice warm temperatures for this time of the year. Certainly good for golf. Bring it on!
This weekend’s Saturday competition for men: Club Champs Rnd 3, others Stableford and for women: Stroke.

14 players had two’s last Saturday and earned $18 each. Nett Eagles was hole 4 and the dollars were split 3 ways.
Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell
Long-range putting.
Never think about how hard to hit a long-range putt. Have a practise stroke looking at the hole and try to feel the distances in your rehearsal stroke – then aim and trust your feel.
Rule of the week – Abnormal course conditions (Rule 16)
With our course having a few of these in play, I thought it appropriate to provide the R & A descriptions as following:
- Animal Hole,
- Ground Under Repair,
- Immovable Obstruction, or
- Temporary Water.
These apply when either your ball or your feet in the abnormal condition for your normal shot stance with the club you are likely to next use. Rule 16 provides where your drop needs to take place.
