Weekly Update – By Club Captain Phil Barlow
It may have been a bit cool on Saturday, but the course was playing faster than we have seen for a while, and there were some tough pins out there. Something for Club Champs finalists and qualifiers to battle with for sure. With another fine week underway, we should have great conditions again for the weekend.
Being out and about playing interclub at different courses has shown that they are also suffering from many pitch marks and divots, so your continued vigilance in looking after our course by filling divots and fixing pitch marks is appreciated.
Reminder - Golf Programme update – The Centenary Shotgun weekend (Saturday 14 October) will now be a single shotgun starting at 9:30am. There was an email from Richard last week about how to enter, so hurry if you want to play, as it is filling very fast. It will be a limited field.
Interclub Update
Woodward Cup (Currently 6th)
Round 4 of Woodward Cup at Russley saw Harewood play Waitikiki. Josh had a good win at 1, Ryan lost against Woobong, Scott sort of threw his match away losing 2/1. Harry lost 2/1 to a steady Simon M. Sam went down to a solid C. Bond. Dan had a good 4/3 win vs Kris O'Neill. Kerry got an important win on the last against AD and Otis had another good win 7/6, meaning a 4 - 4 draw. This week we are at Bottle Lake against Avondale.
Blank Cup (Currently 6th)
We took on Coringa at Clearwater GC on Sunday, and while we felt confident going into the match, the result did not go our way. It was disappointing to lose, but they had some outstanding scoring going on, including players under par halfway through the round. We lost 2 ½ to 5 ½ with some close finishes. A couple of players down the last and one finish on the 17th, but not enough going our way overall. Out to Hororata to take on top placed Russley this weekend.
Simon Cup (Currently 5th)
The Simon cup team had a home match against a strong Templeton side. There were some tight fought matches with good wins to Kerry Lake (4/3 ) , Paul McCormick (2/1) and Jordan Wilson (4/2) . Having match should be advantage but with a couple of close loses the points were shared with a 3 all draw. This week it is a trip out to the beach to play a strong Rawhiti side on the home course.
Pollock Cup (Currently 3rd) by Lynley Gainsford
The Harewood team played on our home course last week against Waimairi.
Unfortunately, even though the ladies gave their best we could only manage 1 win from 6 matches. Many of the girls went to the end but the Waimairi ladies were better on the day.
We had a great turn out with caddies for all and many spectators. Thank you all for your support.
This Sunday we are playing Christchurch at Clearwater. Be assured the ladies will be giving of their best.
This weekend sees round 2 of the match play for the men’s Club Champs, with others playing Combined Stableford. Congratulations to last week’s match play winners. The women have round 1 of the match play for Club Champs with others also playing Combined Stableford.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell
Struggling to get your rounds off to a good start?
I see so many golfers arrive right before their round, rush to the first tee and make a poor first swing! Plan to arrive at the course 15 minutes earlier than usual and hit 25 balls on the driving range. You’ll be surprised how much of an effect a small warm-up can have on your scores.
Rule of the week (6.2b (5))
Ball Is Not in Play Until Stroke Is Made. Whether the ball is teed or on the ground, when starting a hole or playing again from the teeing area:
- The ball is not in play until the player makes a stroke at it, and
- The ball may be lifted or moved without penalty before the stroke is made.
If a teed ball falls off the tee or is knocked off the tee by the player before the player has made a stroke at it, it may be re-teed anywhere in the teeing area without penalty.
But if the player makes a stroke at that ball while it is falling or after it has fallen off, there is no penalty, the stroke counts, and the ball is in play.
