Obituary - David Bell
The Midweek Men are sad to report the passing of David Bell, a popular former member and stalwart of The Midweek Mens group. For many years he was joint Captain of the group and presided over a period when the group was particularly thriving.
Club Update - By General Manager
Centenary Weekend
Thank you to all those who have registered their interest for the events over the weekend. We still have plenty of space for those who maybe interested in attending the Friday night event. If you are interested, please contact the office directly.
Staff Updates
We have had a few changes around the club, so for those playing on Saturday will get to meet Lochie Frazier for the first time, he works in the Pro Shop and it is usually his day off.
Lochie has been with us since the start of August. His golfing background is very brief but was introduced thanks to his grandparents who live on the course at Waimairi Beach. Besides golf he has a background in Water sports, especially Waterpolo, where he has represented New Zealand at age group and open levels. If you haven’t yet already introduced yourself, make sure you say hi to him as he settles into the club.
One of our Greenkeepers Dylan Brown has decided to take on another industry and has finished with the Harewood Golf Club. We wish him well and good luck for the future.
Weekly Update - By Club Captain Phil Barlow
Its warming up and so is some of the scoring we are seeing. The fairways are getting a bit more run, so the winter handicaps will likely start to take a hit. Don’t forget your sunscreen as we head into the warmer part of the year, as the sun will certainly start to burn your skin now.
Its great to see so many out playing on a Saturday, but please remember to hand in your cards so the Pro Shop doesn’t go hunting for them. If for any reason you aren’t handing it in, please let them know.
Interclub Update
Woodward Cup (Currently 4th)
Woodward Cup was at Bottle Lake, the Harewood team going up against Avondale on a fine sunny Sunday.
Josh winning 3/2, Kerry getting a promotion winning 5/4. James H having a good win 3/2, Scott & Dan going down 3/2 and 4/3. Otis continued his impressive first year of Woody with another 3/2 win, Sam W having a 3/2 win. Harry also got a win 2/1 with the team registering a 6-2 win. Currently the team stands in 4th place with a challenging day looming in just over a week’s time at Shirley against top of table Templeton and Pegasus in a double header.
Congratulations to Otis making the Canterbury Junior team vs Aorangi, and James Howard for the Masters. Scott was a little embarrassed making the Men's team due to a lot of regulars being unavailable. Being played this Sunday at Ashburton Golf Club.
Blank Cup (Currently 5th)
A tough day was on offer with 3 members of the team unavailable and coming up against the table topping Russley. We had a bit of a shuffle around and managed to get 2 ½ points off them with Cameron and Brad having wins and Liam getting a half on the last. A couple of other close games were well fought, but it was a tough task. Everyone played with a big heart – well done.
Big thanks to Paul and James for coming up from Simon Cup to help us out, it was much appreciated. A week off this week, so we look to be back to strength again for the first double-header in 2 weekends time at Waimairi Beach against the home team and Pegasus.
Simon Cup (Currently 6th)
A depleted Simon cup team played Rawhiti at Rawhiti on Sunday. With some players up playing for the Blank team, and a couple away, it wasn’t until Saturday afternoon that I had a team for Sunday . Big thanks to Scott Double who had his Simon Cup debut and Barry Coleman who stepped in to help the team. Playing Rawhiti on their home track was always going to be tough, and the team went down 4 to 2. Good wins to Hamish Robertson 2up, and Doug Claridge 1up, and some close loses to Lochie Horne and Barry Coleman who fought valiantly to the 16th to go down 3/2. This week the team is at home to Waimairi Beach on Sunday, so see you out there.
Presidents Cup (Currently 4th)
Prezzies (Dad’s Army) 2nd round vs Russley. We were on our ‘home track’ for our match against Russley GC. Harewood turned on a gorgeous spring morning to welcome our guests. Again, it turned out to be a 4-4 half, with hard fought matches, and a couple going down to the 18th, these were good halves to Dean G and Jock M.
Gary G 6/4, Tim W 7/5 and John Y 6/5 all had solid victories. Losses to Brian T 4/3, Kim D 2/1 and Tony M 3/2, my opponent nearly had a hole in one on #13 finishing within 2” of the hole.
The course played well and the Russley Guys, were very complimentary about our course.
Round 3 is on the 24th September at home vs McLeans Island.
Pollock Cup (Currently 3rd)
Our Pollock team played well at Clearwater against Christchurch last Sunday.
We came away with a half. Some really convincing wins and some really tough battles where matches could have gone either way.
With this result we are standing 3rd equal on the points table.
Our last round robin match is against Clearwater at Waimairi on the 8th October.
The 2 top teams being Russley and Waitikiri are playing each other. We are playing Clearwater with whom we are currently sitting 3rd equal.
So should be a very interesting day. Bring it on we say…
We have had great caddies supporting us each week and we cannot thank them enough for their efforts and encouragement to the team.
They will all deserve a wine at the end I am sure.
Club Day this Saturday sees semi-finals being played for all Club Champs matches. Good luck to all who have reached that milestone. For the others – men have International Stableford and women have Stroke Play. The forecast is for warm and breezy days through the weekend, so as mentioned, don’t forget your sunblock.

There were only 5 two’s last Saturday earning $33 each. Nett Eagles ($81) was hole 14 and was won by Michael Aitkin.
Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell
Use what side of the tee box you tee up on to your advantage.
If you fade the ball, tee up on the right-hand side off the tee box. This will give you more angle and look better to your eye.
If you draw the ball, do the opposite and tee up on the left-hand side of the tee box. Once again you’ve got more angle and room to play your draw.
Rule of the week (Ball resting against the flagstick – Rule 13.2c)
Ball Resting Against Flagstick in Hole
If a player’s ball comes to rest against the flagstick left in the hole:
- If any part of the ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green, the ball is treated as holed even if the entire ball is not below the surface.
- If no part of the ball is in the hole below the surface of the putting green:
- The ball is not holed and must be played as it lies.
- If the flagstick is removed and the ball moves (whether it falls into the hole or moves away from the hole), there is no penalty, and the ball must be replaced on the lip of the hole (see
