Weekly Update - By Club Captain Phil Barlow
El Nino came to visit at lunchtime as expected and those playing in the afternoon had some decent warm breeze to deal with though overcast. Evidence of the recent warm winds was also shown in the drying of the course as we saw it this week. That all being said, this weekend is expected to only just break 10 degrees with potential showers, so dress warmly and come prepared.
Club Champs semi-finals were also on last weekend meaning the finals are on this Saturday, with the following matchups:
Women
- Silver: Pam McTaggart vs Lynn Brand
- Bronze A: Di Chaney vs Diane Deuart
- Bronze B: Catherine Butts vs Alison Lynch
Men
- Seniors: Sam Watkinson vs Otis Holland
- Intermediate: Bevan Seddon vs Glyn Francis
- Junior A: Jarrad Brown vs Alan Cowie
- Junior B: Cook He vs Graeme Clarke
Good luck to all finalists. If you are playing on Saturday while the finals are being underway, please give the players some consideration so their matches can flow as best as possible.
Interclub Update
No interclub for Woodward, Blank or Pollock Cups last weekend, though the men’s teams both have double-headers this Sunday and the Pollock team has another weekend off. Woodward Cup is at Christchurch GC against Pegasus and Templeton, and Blank is at Waimairi Beach against Pegasus and Waimairi Beach.
Simon Cup (Currently 5th)
The Harewood Simon Cup team was the only men’s interclub team playing this weekend with the Canterbury Vs Aorangi fixture on. A home match is one that you hope you can with the home course advantage. With a strong and gusty Nor’ west wind changing the dynamic of the course golf, it becomes a bit of a lottery in how far the ball flies! The outcome was a good 4 to 2 win against Waimairi Beach. Good wins to Hamish Robertson (3/2 ), Kerry Lake (2/1), Doug Claridge (4/3), and Richard Hurley (4/2). The win pushes us up to 5th place with 3 rounds remaining. Hopefully we can get another couple of wins to push for a semi-final place. This week the team is at Greendale against Greendale on Sunday, so see you out there.

Pro Tip of the week – Craig Mitchell
Think like a Tour Pro
Don’t be tempted to aim at a pin in the corner or back of the green. As an example, if the pin is on the left-hand side near the edge of #3, aim 5 metres to the right of that because it’s much easier to 2-putt from there than get up and down from the short side.
Be smart mentally and watch your scores come down!
Rule of the week (Limit on number of clubs – Rule 4.1b)
Limit of 14 Clubs; Sharing, Adding or Replacing Clubs During Round
- Limit of 14 Clubs. A player must not:
- Start a round with more than 14 clubs, or
- Have more than 14 clubs during the round.
This limit includes all clubs carried by or for the player. But it does not include parts of a broken club and separated parts (such as a clubhead, shaft or grip) that are being carried by or for a player at the start of their round.
If the player starts a round with fewer than 14 clubs, they may add clubs during the round up to the 14-club limit (see Rule 4.1b(4) for restrictions in doing this). A club is considered added when the player makes their next stroke with any club while the added club is in the player’s possession.
When the player becomes aware that they are in breach of this Rule by having more than 14 clubs, the player must take the excess club or clubs out of play before making another stroke using the procedure in Rule 4.1c(1):
- If the player started with more than 14 clubs, they may choose which club or clubs will be taken out of play.
- If the player added excess clubs during the round, those added clubs are the ones that must be taken out of play.
