Club Updates - Richard Attwood

Volunteers Working Bee

Thank you to all those who volunteered this week for the garden working bee and Julie Jones for arranging it.

Eagles Golf Raffle

Gary Charmley has informed me that all tickets have been sold! Thank you to those who have brought them. So no tickets will be available this weekend as previously advertised.

New Staff

As Otis has moved on to be our Apprentice in the Greenkeepers team, we have had to find a replacement to assist the Pro shop team to clean carts, pick up golf balls etc.

I would like to introduce George Kinder to the Harewood team. He is a current playing member of the club. He is also currently in his final year of High School at St Bede’s College and is a rower. He is working part time mainly over the weekend, so please make him welcome if you see him around the Pro Shop.

Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow

A beautiful Saturday saw some very low rounds of golf scored. No wind in cool conditions were the order of the day. Congratulations to the qualifiers for the men’s BCHP competition where in the Senior grade, scoring nett par off the black tees didn’t necessarily mean you made the cut – brutal! If you were in the top 16 of your grade, you will soon be getting bookings by the Pro-Shop for the next round. See the Programme book for dates or keep an eye out below for upcoming events. If you can’t make any of the rounds, please let the Pro-Shop know in advance.

Unfortunately, there were long delays off the first tee especially, for those teeing off later in the day with the last nearly 30 minutes late, with some finishing as darkness was setting in with 5-hour rounds. This is unacceptable, especially as the days get shorter, and all of us right from the start of the day need to make an effort to speed up play and be conscious of keeping up with groups in front of us. Ready golf is needed all around whether walking down a fairway, scoring on the next tee block, or reading a putt while others are playing their shot. We will be investigating what else we may be able to do, and that may include asking any lagging groups to miss a hole ahead if they are too far back.

On the good news side of things, Matt McLean and Aidan Christie won a locally played PGA sanctioned Pro-Am event sponsored by Cello. This was a 2-day event on Monday and Tuesday this week at Pegasus and Clearwater, with Matt finishing 4th in the Pro grade and Aidan winning the Amateur grade convincingly. Well done!

This weekend sees the semi-finals for the Harewood 4BBB for both men and women with the finals taking place the following weekend.

Rule of the week – Ready golf

There is no rule of the week, rather a note about ready golf as noted above. We should all be playing ready golf on days when the field is full, and especially on nett rounds where you must putt out. This article states many of the factors that help play ready golf. Some methods to help speed up play:

  • Score your hole at the next tee, and as soon as you get to the next tee, someone should be ready to hit unless the group in front is too close.
  • If you are falling behind, leave the green before everyone is finished and go to the next tee.
  • Shorter hitters should tee off first if there is room.
  • Prepare your shot while others are playing theirs.
  • You don’t really need 3 or 4 practice swings for each shot.
  • Walk ahead if a player is waiting to play, but off to the side of the fairway so you don’t impede.
  • You should always be able to see the players ahead of you on a par 4.
  • Generally speaking, it’s OK to play out of turn as long as everyone is aware.
