Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow
The frosts continue to have an impact on our golf at the moment as those that normally start early will attest. It was great however to see some of the normally early men in the clubroom at prizegiving time last Saturday after playing at the tail of the field. Coincidentally Mark Duggan was also a winner of the Nett Eagles on the day, so a timely visit. The frost aside, it was a beautiful golfing day with no wind and warm for a while, though after the cloud arrived, it cooled down a bit, and you will have noticed the ball was not travelling as far as earlier in the round. It was also great to see some newer faces out there, and a lot of men having a go at all irons, in fact nearly half of the field (42 players) had a shot at it. I suspect the Pro Shop may get a couple of driving iron sales out of it! The sad side was that there were so many divots left unattended on the yellow tees. Remember we all need to play a part in keeping out course pristine, so that means look after the divots and pitch marks.
Pace of play was better last weekend, however there are still too many players turning up to the first tee “a bit late”. With what we are experiencing now with a full sheet of players, please turn up ready to go on the first tee 10-15 mins prior to your tee time. It won’t hurt to watch the people in front tee off ahead of you. If you are late, you are likely going to be asked to go to the back of the field.
A reminder also that Saturday 8 June is when we move to winter tee times with 2 tee starts taking place from 10am. Take note of which tee you are assigned when you book and remember that there will be pressure on tee times while the men’s BCHP competition is on.
This weekend is the mixed Kings Birthday Shotgun. If you have booked, please be there before 11am to beat the rush to register and be ready for an 11:30am tee off as we have a full field of 120. As with all other shotgun competition, registration is $20 and puts you in for all prizes If you don’t already have a tee time, you are probably out of luck, however, call the Pro Shop to check, and even on Saturday morning just in case anyone pulls out. There is a reserves list being held. The women also have the Linney Trophy this weekend.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
People ask me all the time “What’s the best way to take five shots off my score?”
My answer is always the same, work on your short game from 30 metres into the hole.
- Chipping
- Pitching
- Bunker play
- Short & long putting
I then see eighty percent of them hitting drivers on the range, and they go home without doing any short game!
Try my advice it works.
Rule of the week (Removing loose impediments in a bunker – 12.2 a)
One of the new rules enacted in 2019 was that you may “remove loose impediments and movable obstructions”. In general, loose impediments are things such as stones, litter, clumps of soil etc, however this does not include anything attached to the ground within the bunker, such as a weed. For a full list of loose impediments, have a look here at the rules of the R & A.

Putting Cup:
After six qualifying rounds, the Putting Cup concluded with John Yates the overall winner. His victory was more to do with a stunning 23 putt round rather than the fact that he was in charge of compiling the scores! Patrick Guo came in second; maybe he have had managed to complete one or two more of the qualifying rounds ...

Great to see some new faces joining in – even if they did take the prizes! Maybe this is an incentive for the rest of the Club?!

A few more new faces wouldn’t go amiss – especially for the Nancy Raymond Trophy which is always a vibrant event.
