Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow

You could have been excused for overdressing last weekend on what appeared to be a perfect summer day, only it is mid-winter. The 20 degrees supplemented with no wind made it probably one of the nicest golfing days ever! Not to take anything away from it, come prepared for very cold playing conditions this weekend wi9th predicted 4 deg at 10am.

This weekend sees the start of the qualifying rounds for the men’s club champs. This means all tees will be in use, so please be patient this Saturday while they are taking place.

Interclub update

This weekend also sees the start of the main interclub competition for our men with all 3 teams (Woodward and Blank cups, and Thompson MacDonald trophy) teeing off this Sunday to begin their quests to their respective finals day. Thanks to Terry Coleman for volunteering to do the overall coordination of all 3 teams, along with managing the Woodward team. Thanks also to Doug Claridge and Phil Barlow for managing the Blank and Thompson MacDonald teams respectively. We have real depth this year, so hopeful of solid results. The women’s Pollock cup team starts in another week’s time.

This weekend’s club competitions are: Men - Club Champs Qualifying Rnd 1, others Stableford. Women: LGU Rnd 7, Putting, Paterson Salver Rnd 3.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

The 3 most important things in long range putting are SPEED, SPEED, SPEED!

So having said that, yes, the line is important, but the speed is everything. My advice is don’t fall in love with the line and then hit the putt with the wrong speed.

Rule of the week – Repairing a green

You can repair almost any damage to a putting green, including spike marks, ball marks, indentations, and animal damage, without penalty. You may use your hands, feet, or other body parts, as well as normal equipment like a ball-mark repair tool, tee, or club. The goal is to restore the green to its original condition as much as possible, but you can't unreasonably delay play.

You may mark, lift and clean a ball on the green at any time, remove sand and loose soil, and repair old hole plugs and ball-marks.
