Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow
It was great to have friendly weather again for Saturday golf after the hard frost did its thing. You could be excused for thinking it had snowed with the early coverage that we had. It wasn’t as warm as the previous week, but just a fine with no wind. The course played deceptively fast on the greens with some tough pin placements.
This weekend sees the 2nd of 3 qualifying rounds for the men’s club champs. This means all 4 tees will be in use, so please be patient this Saturday while they are taking place. Remember to check during the week if you miss out on a tee slot for match of the day while the club champs are taking place. There are slots that free up later in the week.
I would like to remind all members that we have many volunteers in the club who do a wide raft of activities. Mid-week players tending gardens, Sunday junior programmes, range ball gathering, weekly raffles as well as other maintenance work around the whole site. We all thank you for your efforts to help make this club what it is.
Interclub update
Woodward Cup – Scott Manyweathers
The 1st week of Woodward cup started off with Harewood vs Waitikiri at Pegasus on a cold frosty morning turning in a great day after a 1-hour delay. James Howard, our import was beaten 4/3. Cameron Powell made the step up to Woodward this year and fought hard losing 1 down to Kris Oneill. Josh Smith won his match (unfortunately complications meant he was DQ’d). Sam McCarroll also made the step up to Woodward from Blank and won 1 up. Scott Manyweathers sneaked a win on the final hole to get a 1 up win. Otis Holland and Ryan Barham had massive wins both playing well. Kerry Branson had a loss going 2 down. On the day winning with a 5-3 result then getting adjusted to 4-4 was gutting for the guys, but we'll pick ourselves up and go again this weekend at Waitikiri GC vs Pegasus.
Blank Cup – Doug Claridge
After a heavy frost delaying the start time for an hour, the Harewood Blank team took on Pegasus at Coringa golf club. The course had been well setup, with the greens running fast and true once they had thawed out. The team came away with a 5-3 win.
Good wins from Neville Bamford 4/3, Aiden Christie 5/3, Scott Tobin 2/1, Matt Johnson 2/1, and Liam Keegan who won on the last 1 up after a fight back from his opposition. The other team members Brad Edmonston, Toby Milne and Jordan Wilson all fought hard against their opposition, but unfortunately came out on the wrong side of the ledger.
On Sunday the team remains the same and we travel across to the east side of town to the Avondale Golf Club to take on a strong Christchurch side at 9.30 am.
McDonald Thompson Cup – Phil Barlow
Round 1 of the Thompson McDonald (Simon div 2) trophy and we had Templeton at home. After a long wait to start we headed out to try to take down one of last years finalists at home. Jason Stachan and Richard Hurley at 1 & 2 both had very tough opposition and took losses. Phil Barlow and James Anderson at 3 & 4 had slow starts being down early, but both pulled though with holes to spare after playing well through the mid area of the match. Lochie Horne had a tough match at No 5 and took his opponent to the 17th before going down, while Kerry Lake had a comfortable win at No 6. So, a 4-4 draw with a very close match is a great start against this team. This week sees us take on Coringa at their course, so another tough match.
This weekend’s club competitions are: Men - Club Champs Qualifying Rnd 2, others Par. Women: - Combined stableford.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
I was watching the post-round interview with Paddy Harrington the other day and I thought it was funny when the interviewer asked him if he had a swing thought. His reply was his swing thought was not to have a swing thought.
Next time you play its OK to have one swing thought… many players have two, three, or even four swing thoughts which really doesn’t help.
