Member Updates
We are now over the 60% mark for all subscriptions so keep them coming in! Thank you to all those who have settled with the office team. We don’t want to be chasing you at the end of the month.
Harewood Golf Club Local Rule
If the ball is laying on new mounding surrounding holes 4,5,9,12 and 13 and on tree stumps marked with orange paint, it is a compulsory free drop.
All other areas are in play and usual golf rules apply eg machinery tracks etc.
Left Handed Clubs – Driving Range
The Pro Shop is on the lookout for some left-handed clubs to be used on the driving range. If you have any hidden away in the garage the team would love to use them at the club rather than gathering dust.
Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow
Warm breeze, fast greens, and plenty of run on the fairways – spring is here. You could have even thought it was a summers day last Saturday as the sunscreen was definitely required.
The men have completed the first round of Match Play for Club Champs. Congratulations to all that had a win, including the ones on the 21st and 22nd holes – close matches. The women have also had their qualifying round, so we are well into Club Champs mode for a few weeks.
This weekend for those men not in Club Champs is Combined Stableford, and for the women not in Club Champs it is Irish Stableford.
This Saturday (7 September) we are back to single tee starts with summer tee times. There is also going to be a couple of changes to the October and December programme as we are hosting both the South Island Strokeplay and National Toro competitions. Keep an eye on upcoming Woodlands Word for more information on the changes.
Interclub reports
Woodward Cup – Scott Manyweathers
Woodward team were at Waimairi Beach against Weedons last week. James Howard had great win, Cameron Powell and Ryan Barham had losses. Sam McCarroll and Otis Holland battled hard eventually both losing 2 down. Josh Smith and Kerry Branson both grinding out hard fought 1up wins. Scott Manyweathers was 1 up on the last hole, the 9th, but unfortunately hit a snap hook into the hazard. With his opponent just missing his birdie putt, Scott had a 15 footer to win his match and get 4-4 draw, but unfortunately missed. too. A 3 ½ to 4 ½ loss for the was a bit gutting. We have to pick out ourselves up for table toppers Clearwater side at Weedons this weekend.
Blank Cup – Doug Claridge
The Harewood Blank team were at Templeton last Sunday on a fine and unseasonally warm day. The result was not what we wanted against Clearwater, going down 5/3. Good wins to Brad Edmonston 3/1, Toby Milne 4/3, and Matt Johnson continued his winning form this season with a 4/2 win. The team had a couple of new faces, welcoming back Adam Highfield to the Harewood interclub team and new member Simon Watson.
This Sunday we have home advantage, with the Blank interclub round scheduled for Harewood this weekend. We are up against a strong Avondale side who lead the competition after 3 rounds. Hopefully the teams knowledge of our course helps in getting a win.
Thompson MacDonald – Phil Barlow
With a 21 deg day and a home game against Bottle Lake were hopeful of getting a win to climb the leaderboard. We did just that with a 4/2 win including a convincing 8/7 win By Ross Fowler playing his first round. Phil Barlow and Kerry Lake were down early but both had wins in the closing holes with Kerry continuing his unbeaten record. James Peck ran out of holes after being 5 down early to go down 3/2 in his first game, as did Richard Hurley, so both losses were close. Lochie Horne had his first win 4/3 and will be hoping for a repeat this weekend where we take on Avondale at their home course. Well done guys and hopefully we can repeat it this weekend.

There were 8 twos on Saturday paying $20 each. Nett Eagles was $77 and hole 15 was drawn and won by Anne Beckingsale on her own.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Advice for long bunker shots (20 to 40 metres).
My advice for long bunker shots is to use a Gap Wedge or your Pitching Wedge if you don’t have a steep lip. Open the face a little and play it the same way as you would with your sand wedge, the advantage of doing this is it’s a lot easier to get the distance because the loft is less, so you don’t have to hit the shot really hard to get the distance.
