Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow
A switch from strong nor’ westers to a cool gentle southerly a bit later in the day gave us everything to deal with last weekend. It was certainly trying for the field with the variety of conditions to deal with, but that didn’t stop some strong scoring.
The men have completed the second round of Match Play for Club Champs, and the women have completed their first round. Congratulations to all that had a win, and good luck to you all in the semi-finals this weekend.
This weekend for those men not in Club Champs is International Stableford, and for the women not in Club Champs it is Combined Stableford. There may be some adverse weather over the whole weekend, so come prepared.
A reminder there going to be a couple of changes to the October and December programme as we are hosting both the South Island Strokeplay and National Toro competitions. Keep an eye on upcoming Woodlands Word for more information on the changes or check with the Pro Shop if you have any questions. The first of these is the Harewood Anniversary Shotgun at 12:30 October. Names will be taken by the Pro Shop and the field is limited to 120 entries.
The interclub teams are all getting well into their seasons now, so if you get time to go out on a Sunday to watch one of the Harewood teams, they will enjoy your support. See the Canterbury Golf website for draws for all teams.
Interclub reports
Woodward Cup – Terry Coleman
On Sunday the Woodward team took on the table topping Clearwater team at the Weedon’s course. On a warm day for a change the team got off to a flying start and after 6 or 7 holes we had three up and 4 others running square. However, even with some good scoring golf, the quality of Clearwater team slowly saw them taking control.
Scott Manyweathers ground out a good 3/2 win, with James Howard and Kerry Branson fighting for 2 very good halves. Josh Smith, Ryan Barham, Sam McCarroll, Cameron Powell and Otis Holland at varies stages of their rounds got into or back into their match but were eventually run down over the final few holes.
A 6/2 loss to top of the ladder Clearwater and now with a week off recouping for a double header on the 22nd at Russley.
Blank Cup – Doug Claridge
Home advantage helped against Avondale who were the top team in the Blank cup grade. The Harewood Blank team played well and came away with a 5 to 3 win, that was decided on the 18th in the last match.
Watching the games being played and with some of the pin positions, home advantage helped. On the second hole all the matches I watched were halved or won by Harewood. With the opposition playing at the pin, and where the pin was, often rolling into the bowl to the side, and then struggling to get up and down.
Good wins to Simon Watson (5/4) Neville Bamford (5/4), Scot Tobin (3/2), Aiden Christie (3/2) and Adam Highfield 1 up on the last to secure the win. Toby Milne played well against a strong No 1 to lose 2/1, and Sam Watkinson returned to interclub golf for Harewood to lose on the last 1 down against a very strong player.
It was good to catch up with David Shipley our Harewood Golf Club Patron who came out to watch and support the team during the middle stages of the match. This week we have a week off before a double round at Christchurch Golf Club, taking on Bottle Lake in the morning round, and Hororata in the afternoon.
Thompson MacDonald – Phil Barlow
An away game against Avondale meant we could not take them lightly, especially as they had scored better than us against teams we had played. Matches were even through the first 9 holes with most within 1 either way.
The second half however belonged to us with a couple of strong wins by Jason Strachan 5/4 and Lochie Horne 4/2. Ross Fowler had a 2/1 win, Phil Barlow a 3/1, and Kerry Lake a 3/2 win. After being 5 down early, James Peck managed to take his opponent down the last but unfortunately couldn’t stop a 2nd loss after his opponent had a career up and down from the bunker. A fantastic effort all around that puts us in the top 4.
This weekend we have Waimairi Beach away which always makes the matches a bit harder, and a bit of a lineup change so we are looking forward to taking it to them.
Pollock Cup – Lynley Gainsford
A tough day on the golf course for the Pollock Cup girls on Sunday.
We played Christchurch at Russley. We lost 5 ½.
Have to say we were all so proud of our young number one Lannie Inoue from being down by 3 and coming back to get a half.
Check out the Harewod Facebook page of how we should all play a bunker shot when up against the face, one foot out of the bunker.
The video was taken on hole number 9 a par 3 at Russley. Lannie takes her time and finds her balance, beautifully out and within 6 inches of the cup.
Something for all of us to aspire to. She did manage to par and halve with Monica Tulisi from Christchurch Golf Club.
A big thank you to the ladies that came out to caddy and the spectators who came to watch. Always great to see the support from the members of Harewood Golf Club.
Rest week next week and then the following week we take on Waitikiri at Waitikiri.

There were only 6 twos on Saturday paying $34 each. Nett Eagles was $97 and hole 18 was drawn and won by Yvonne Epton on her own.
Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell
Next time you’re going to the range to hit a bucket of balls do this… Go to the putting green and do some short game work first then hit the bucket of balls second because all of us have the best of intensions of doing this after the bucket of balls but it never happens.
