Member Updates

Subscriptions

We are on a bit of a role this month with many more members coming in and arranging their subscription payments for the upcoming year. Remember this can be done in the Office or at the Pro Shop. We do have the membership cards and will be passing these out in the coming week, another reason to get your subscriptions finalised with us.

Bar Supplier Survey

Every five years the club reviews its bar partner. We have been well supported by Asahi for the last 5 years. As with any major investment we should go to market and see what support we can get for the benefit of the Club.

Later today you will receive a 30 sec survey to provide your feedback on this process. Please encourage as many of your fellow members to complete this survey so we can factor this into our decision making process. This is to be completed by Monday 5:00pm.

Volunteer Working Bee

Thank you to the 18 people who turned up on Wednesday who refreshed the gardens and made a great start to cleaning down the posts around the course

Thank you, Julie Jones

Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow

The club champs semi-finals for both men and women were played last Saturday in a cold northerly. The beanies were broken out again after a couple of warmer weekends and the course was playing a lot longer than the previous weekend. Congratulations and good luck to all that made the finals for next weekend for the men, and congratulations to the 2024 women’s winners from their finals played on Sunday. A report on their finals a bit further below. The men’s finals matches are:

Senior:                  Scott Manyweathers vs Otis Holland
Intermediate:      Tony Tully vs Doug Claridge
Junior A:               Harvey Teulon vs Alan Cowie
Junior B:               Gill Harris vs Brad Milne

A reminder there going to be a couple of changes to the October and December programme as we are hosting both the South Island Strokeplay and National Toro competitions. The first of these changes is the reprogrammed Harewood Anniversary Shotgun at 12:30 October 5. We seem to be continually hit with adversity in our attempts to get this inaugural round across the line. Names are now being taken by the Pro Shop and the field is limited to 120 entries.

This weekend for the rest of the men is Irish Stableford, and for the women is a Stroke round. Note this differs from the original programme.

Women’s Club Champs – Lesley Hedges

Last weekend saw the Club Champs semis and finals for the women. The weather had been forecast to be horrible but in fact turned out to be merely dismal! In response to member feedback, we had instituted a number of changes to the format, including having a more condensed time frame. From start to finish and including qualifying, our club champs took place over 15 days. Pleasingly, we also had more participants than in previous years. We are looking forward to feedback on these changes.

Despite the weather, there was a great turnout of members who came out to watch the closing stages and who also stayed on for a happy and convivial prizegiving. It is really heartening to see this level of support for the club champs, which is the premium event in our golfing calendar, and we were treated to some excellent golf. Many thanks to all who participated, caddied, organized, helped and supported. Finally, of course, warmest congratulations to our new champions.

Interclub reports

There was no interclub for Woodward or Blank Cup teams last weekend. They both have double rounds this Sunday with Woodward at Russley GC, and Blank playing at Christchurch GC.

Thompson MacDonald – Phil Barlow

Another away game, this time at Waimairi Beach against the home team that was just ahead of us on the table. All Harewood players started strongly on a very cold and drizzly morning. It was great to have Terry Coleman and Neville Bamford out there supporting the team on the day – thanks guys!

We were bolstered for this match with Sam Watkinson offering up his services along with a welcome return to golf by Troy Clark, with both having good wins at 3 and 4. James Peck continued to play solid golf and came away with a 2 up win while his playing partner, Kerry Lake continued his unbeaten form winning 3/2. “Number 1”, Ross “Chook” Fowler also continued to show dominant form winning 6/5. The only loss in our 5-1 win was a 2/1 down by yours truly after having an average game of sorts. Well done guys and we now have 2 home games in a row starting with McLeans Island this Sunday followed by Greendale next Sunday.

There were only 6 twos on Saturday paying $36 each. Nett Eagles was $99 and hole 11 was drawn and won by Pete Chadwick on his own.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

Bunker Play

Next time you have a green side bunker shot, and the sand is wet and firm – square the club face so the leading edge of your sand iron can now dig into the sand but do everything else the same.

The softer the sand the more you open the face so you can use the bounce of the club.
