Member Updates

New Zealand Interprovincials

Thank you to all those who have put forward their names to volunteer for the NZ Interprovincials. We still have a few spare spots for people to be starters on the days indicated. I will be in touch with further details to those who have contacted me.

South Island Interprovincials

A good day out was had by all last Saturday, weather was great and so was the golf. A good way to prepare for the Nationals in December. Thanks to the team at G&T Catering for fueling the teams throughout the day, the feedback from everyone was excellent! Thanks also to the Greenkeepers for preparing the course and presenting it in great condition.

Café Open Labour Day

If you are playing golf on Labour Day, please visit the Woodlands Lounge for a drink or a bit to eat. It will be open from 12:00pm.

Volunteers

I would like to make a special thank you to Julie Jones and her group of volunteers for ensuring the gardens are kept in great shape especially in the lead up to the Interprovincials. The gardens always look particularly good this time of year thanks to this special team of volunteers.

Upcoming - Tree Work

In partnership with the Christchurch International Airport there will tree work taking place on the property next week. The trees on the plains course to the right of the number 1 hole will be removed including trimming of the pine trees. On the week of the 4th the pines trees on the right hand side of the driving range will be trimmed with some being cut down. We will be left with a pile of mulch for the gardens and some additional wood to be cut up for firewood. As a result, and for safety reasons the driving range will be closed on some days. Please check the status online or check with the Pro shop if it is open or not.

Club Captain Update – Phil Barlow

With the South Island Interprovincials on at Harewood and Russley Golf Clubs this weekend past, there was no Saturday Club Day golf for members. We hope you enjoyed alternate games somewhere in Canterbury for a change. I know the bus that went down to Methven had a great day joining in with their club day and taking away a few prizes and raffles. Thanks to Tony pole and the team for making that happen.

The Canterbury men’s and women’s teams both won the South Island Interprovincials this year with the men having 3 wins from their 4 matches. The women defended their win from last year also with 3 wins. Our own club champ Scott Manyweathers had a good weekend with a win and a half at Harewood followed by a win and a loss at Russley to help the men’s team on their way to the win. Debbie Scott and Julie Jones will be proud managers of the women’s team as well.

The ladies Allprint Shootout took place last Sunday. Congratulations to Denise Guerin for taking it out for what is believed to be the 4th time. Well done also to Liz Warren for staying all day to come away in 2nd place.

This weekend is the Cancer Charities Stableford for both men and women, with a pink and blue theme for dress. We all look forward to seeing what Kim Dale will bring to the day. Please drop a gold coin (or more) into the collection box so we can donate to a cancer charity.

Interclub report

Thompson MacDonald Trophy – Terry Coleman

Terry Coleman came along to the semi-final against top qualifier Coringa and wrote this round-up for us.

The Thompson MacDonald team finished 4th in the round robin comp and earned the right to play in the semi-final against the 1st place team Coringa.

Most were picking a Coringa win BUT our team were quietly confident that once in the finals they could get the job done. And after the first nine a big win was on the cards, up in all games at some stage BUT everyone knew the opposition would not go easily. Kerry Lake playing 6, Sam Watkinson at 2 and Jason Strachan at 3 however did carry on their winning ways and won 5/3, 4/3 and 4/3 respectively. We had 3. The standard of golf in all 6 matches was high. Ross Fowler at one, in a close match, in his own words lost a couple of holes at the turn and against a tough opponent never got those back. Loss 3/2. Troy Clark at 5 was playing the Salvo winner (most wins in the grade during the year) and again in a tight match lost a couple of holes and ended up in a 2/1 loss. Phil Barlow at 4 was square with 6 holes to play but lost the next 2 holes. Then in a true Captains fight back knock won 15, 16 and then 17 and we were in the Final.

We play McLeans Island (3rd qualifier) on Sunday the 10th of November, and would love to see as many people as possible at Avondale for a 1.00pm tee off.

In other interclub, the only other match since last week was the Presidents who drew against Bottle Lake. Their next game is on the 10th November. A correction to last week’s report, the Woodward cup team have a catch up match on 3rd November against Waimairi Beach at Christchurch GC.

Pro Tip by Craig Mitchell

To improve your short putting try the famous Phil Mickelson drill.

Get 10 balls and make a four-foot circle around a hole on the practice green (a gentle sloping putt) and then work your way around the hole.

  • Work through your pre putt routine
  • If you miss one you must start all over again :)

This works if you put the time in.

Women Allprint Shootout – Lynette Savage

The HGC 2024  Allprint shootout was played last Sunday with the course in great condition having hosted the South Island Interprovincial the previous day.
The field of 16 nervously started on the par 3 third hole and the competition was underway in near perfect weather with some great golf scores requiring 10 shoot outs to find the player not progressing to the next hole.
The eventual winner was Denise Guerin from Liz Warren, both of whom played steady calm shots finishing with total scores well under their handicaps.

The Allprint shoot out is a prestigious competition and the top prize is generously donated by Annette and Ray Tansey, and includes two nights accommodation in Tekapo Luxury Apartments , two rounds of golf at the McKenzie Golf Club, two vouchers for night sky viewing with Silver River Stargazing, plus a meal voucher for the Kohan Japanese restaurant, and their continued sponsorship is gratefully appreciated.

This competition would also not be possible without the help and support of five scorers on the day, the two sheriffs controlling the play on the day, and the help and support of Craig, Lockie and Annabel in the pro shop, a big thanks to everyone.
